A pretty thin story and some very weird acting, but this film is packed with fight scenes and is a blast to watch! Probably at least 90 of this film's 107 minutes are fights, and good ones too. Martial arts fans shouldn't miss this gem.

This film is an amazing achievement in both storytelling and fight choreography. The director's simple, economical camera setups mirror the brutal efficiency of the karate on display here. A wonderful breath of fresh air in the martial arts genre.
Stunning production values and cinematography, though we were unimpressed by the meandering story and CGI effects. There is also not as much martial arts action here as there is rumored to be.

Jackie Chan, Anita Mui Yim-Fong, Ti Lung, Felix Wong (Yat Wa) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Pretty much as good as it gets for Jackie Chan martial arts films! Lots of creative fight scenes (Jackie Chan does "drunken boxing" better than anyone!), filmed very well, with characters you care about; interesting sets and cinematography; and a good, simple plot. Top this off with an irresistible performance by the ever-naughty Anita Mui and a great soundtrack, and you've got a real winner.
Plot: A female heir to the throne (Kelly Chen) receives martial arts training from a loyal General (Donnie Yen) that she may survive as a female ruler in a male world.
Simply our favorite Jet Li film, featuring some of the best fight choreography, acting, and cinematography we've seen. The plot is easy to follow, and this film is always a joy to watch. If you only buy one martial arts DVD in your life, this is the one it should be.

We really disliked this film. The action scenes looked like rehearsals--very slow and performed without any energy. A paradoxically bad effort from an undeniably gifted cast and crew.

Another awesome old school martial arts flick from Gordon Liu and Shaw Brothers Studios. You can't go wrong with a Gordon Liu film...
