| Overview: | One of Bunuel's personal favorites of his "Mexican period" films, "Ascent To Heaven" (also known as "Mexican Bus Ride") is a genial surrealistic comedy with many of the earmarks of Bunuel's later works, including probably the best surreal sequence of any of his Mexican films.
Newly wed Oliverio is Shanghaied mid-honeymoon by his brothers to see their dying mother. Knowing that her greedy brood is just waiting for her to die to divide up her loot, the old woman asks the virtuous Oliverio to find a lawyer and make her will. However, this means taking the dilapidated town bus across country... But getting there, as they say, is half the fun.
With a screenplay based on a miasma of real-life events, Bunuel crams the bus with raucous peasants, pompous businessmen, shifty politicians, and, most notably, town vamp Raquel, hell bent on straying Oliverio from the good path...
