This historical epic is Imamura's most ambitious project so far. According to himself, he has conceived the idea of the film for ten years and spent six years in writing and revising the script. The story takes place just during the Keio Era in mid-nineteenth century Japan and tells of a peasant riot conspired by the various political factions of the time. "Time Out" magazine has this to say of the film: "Imamura breathes bawdy life into the bones of Japanese history with this mosaic portrait of the political chaos preceding the Imperial Meiji Restoration. A confusing welter of factions and mercenary figures flit through a complex of allegiances and relationships, but as the title translate--echoing the rioters' cries--"What the hell!", the canvas is vivid enough to impress the most Eurocentric of spectacles."
