An excellent film, though one desperately in need of some editing. No one can deny that Kitamura has a hell of a visual flair; and this film is a great example of his abilities, self-indulgent though they may be.
This film exemplifies what good filmmaking is all about. It's a story of people finding meaningful connections with each other in a small Japanese community in the late '50s, as even the country itself is re-defining itself. Brilliant direction, acting, effects...a beautiful score, it's got it all, a true gem.
