HKFLIX.com DVD VS. VHS

So, you've decided to buy some HK movies. Where should you get them and on which format?

We strongly prefer DVDs over VHS. DVD players have really come down in price. Try MobShop.com or PriceGrabber for a good deal on a DVD player.

DVDs work well with import films in particular because virtually every movie is presented in widescreen. With a widescreen format, you'll get black bars at the top and bottom of your TV screen, but you'll see the film it was meant to be seen. Fight scenes in particular make more sense if you watch them in widescreen.

Hong Kong DVDs usually have Mandarin and Cantonese language tracks and several subtitle tracks which, besides ENGLISH often include: Chinese (Traditional), Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, Bahasa (Indonesian), Bahasa (Malaysian), Thai, Korean, and Vietnamese.

Hong Kong DVDs are generally coded so they will work with all DVD players. In comparison, almost all mainstream American DVDs sold in North America will only work with DVD players in North America.

Here's a list of general advantages DVDs have over VHS:
Better Picture Quality: For starters, the quality of the picture is amazing. Some people will say this DVD player or that DVD player has a great picture, but really they all have a far superior picture than what most people are used to. VHS has static and can skip and jump around sometimes. The DVD is crystal clear all the time.

Better Sound Quality: If you have Dolby Digital or Digital Theater Sound (DTS) compatible components, you will truly experience a virtual theater sound presentation.

More Capacity: Because the DVDs are just like a CDROMs, they can hold a lot more information. This allow the Studios to put other things on your movie. You can see the trailer to the movie, shorts about the making of the movie, listen to director's commentary, or watch documentaries about the special effects.

Other Features: This also allows for an on-screen index that will enable you to jump to any scene in the movie instantly. You don't have to fast forward or rewind. But let's say you want to use the fast forward feature... You can adjust the speed. Do you want to go a 2, 4, 8, 16, or 32 times normal speed? Do you want to zoom into a scene or go in crystal clear slow motion? Those options are a snap, too. Some DVDs will even let you select which camera angle you want to watch the movie from!

Easier to Store: Since DVD movies are so much smaller, they will take up a lot less room in your video library, enabling you to have many more movies. Also, they can be tucked away in a cabinet instead of on a rack in the middle of your room.

Will Last Longer: DVDs will also last a lot longer. Because the discs have the images and audio burned into them, they can't easily be scratched. There is no mechanical contact with the data on the disc, so it doesn't wear out like a magnetic tape. The discs will last about 100 years no matter how many times you play them.

Conclusion: DVD prices are currently plummeting. Don't be the last one on your block without one!
