Jet Li stars as Chinese folk hero Fong Sai Yuk, who runs afoul of the local Manchu rulers and a power-hungry warrior while trying to find a special box that contains information on who is the true emperor of China. This movie isn't horrible, in fact, it's quite good in parts -- it's just that there's really nothing to set it apart from dozens of other similar movies. Jet Li fans should still enjoy it a lot, though.

The legendary warrior Fong Sai Yuk has succeeded in winning the heart of the lovely Ting Ting and married her. Now, he has a new mission on his hands. With the assistance of his mother, he must seduce the beautiful Man Yin to get a box that has secret information on Red Lotus leader Chan Ka Lok. The one man who despises Sai Yuk is fellow Red Lotus member Yu, who is hellbent on trying to take over the clan himself. When Sai Yuk succeeds and gets the document back, he is disabled when he send Chan a forged copy due to his suspicions of Yu. Chan learns of Yu's betrayal and decides to have himself kidnapped to end the violence, after Li Kwok Bun, a friend of Sai Yuk's was killed after protecting Fong's mother. When Fong's mother is kidnapped by Yu and the clan, Sai Yuk, not fully healed, must seek the ultimate revenge against his former clan and save Chan, who is actually headed to be the next Emperor.

Jet Li is back in the role of the legendary Fong Sai Yuk, who comes in only second to Wong Fei Hung as one of the most portrayed roles in kung fu films. This time, the only flaw of the film was the film's premise. Knowing the first Legend of Fong Sai Yuk was a hit, the producers rushed into making this one and that was the key problem. If they had the patience to take some time, they could've came up with a better and more developed storyline. Nevertheless, this film gets 3 stars because of its intense fight choreography, combining kung fu, wirework, and even samurai swordsmanship. Jet Li and former Shaolin Temple villain Kai Chun Wai reunite as hero and bad guy once again. This time, they are supported by Adam Cheng, a legend on his own, two beauties in Michelle Reis and Amy Kwok; Josephine Siao (reprising her role from the first film); and fight choreographer/director Corey Yuen in a supporting role. The film is known for action, not plot.

A fun and good looking sequel, but not nearly as engaging as the original. Jet Li returns as the charming Fong Sai Yuk and his mother, played by Josephine Siao, gets a much larger portion of the action this time around. She's great! Michelle Reis returns as Fong Sai Yuk's sweetheart, although now her love is being contested by a cunning and seductive Amy Kwok. Ms. Reis actually fights in this one! Good fighting and set pieces, but it lacks heart and purpose.

Fong Sai Yuk 2 continues the previous adventures, with both the incomparable Jet Li as Fong Sai Yuk and the impressive Josephine Siao as his skilled and over-bearing mother. Mixing comedy, melodrama, romance, colorful costumes and sets, and impressive wire-fu action, Fong Sai Yuk II is another mesmerizing historical martial arts effort from action choreographer extraordinaire Corey Yuen (Righting Wrongs, Enter the Eagles). The story is silly and sometimes crude, but its joyful, fast-paced and light-hearted script easily makes up for it. The finale, a fight between Li and the traitor above a teetering pile of chairs while Li is distracted by trying to save his mother from hanging, is a classic. Not as well rounded or funny as the first installment, Fong Sai Yuk II relies more on its chaotic excess, intricate action scenes and over-the-top situations to deliver great Hong Kong-style entertainment.

This sequel more or less lives up to the original for action, excitement, and creative stunt work. The tone is a bit darker than the last film, though there are still plenty of laughs. The ideas are also a bit less fresh. One of the comedic highlights of the film, a battle on top of a high pavilion, is somewhat reminiscent of the tower fight in the first film. The story is different, but the film still unfolds much like the first one. Nonetheless, this should not stop anyone from seeing this film, even if they haven't seen the first one. Once again Jet Li turns in a fine performance in a thoroughly enjoyable film filled with creative action scenes.

In terms of martial arts...
Jet is very good, but keep in mind that this film is a comedy (with plenty of violence) and uses lots of wires.
MARTIAL ARTS RATING 3.5/5
