A look at the very beginning of Judo, and one man's struggle to prove Judo's superiority to the then-common Jujitsu. He learns more about himself while honing his skills.
"Sanshiro Sugata" is the tale of the emergence of the fighting art of Judo in old Japan. Set in the late 19th century, the film follows a wayward young man, Sugata, and his quest for knowledge.
Overview:
Akira Kurosawa made his directorial debut with this exciting film set in the martial arts world of the late 19th century. Sugata, an inexperienced young fighter, becomes a judo pro under the guidance of a wise "sensei," or teacher. After becoming a master, he makes it his life's mission to convince everybody how much better the then-new martial arts form was compared to jujitsu. At the same time, he undergoes a quest for inner peace.
