"A Better Tomorrow 3" was made by writer/producer/director Tsui Hark after he and John Woo, the co-writer/director of parts 1 and 2, had a falling out. This is an unnecessary, less visually interesting film than the previous two, a prequel which removes some of the mystique from Chow Yun Fat's character, Mark Gor, giving him a back-story he was better without. Still, Tsui Hark's visual flair and storytelling facility, while inferior to John Woo's, are better than most, and this is an entertaining film. John Woo made his most harrowing film, "Bullet in the Head," using the general outline of the plot he would have used in this film if he had stayed on the project. It is a hugely superior film, but I think "A Better Tomorrow 3" outperformed it in the Hong Kong market.

YBtw3 isn't a bad film and dosen't deserve all the criticism it gets. I think it would of fared much better if it totally cut all association with the BT series as they were an impossible act to followAH1706
YGood review! I agree that the prequel does take away from the character developement off Mark Gor. I did enjoy the film and I especially loved the acting of the late beautiful Anita Mui!Sgt. T

Tsui Hark's prequel to a "A Better Tomorrow".

Plot: Mark-Gor (Chow Yun-Fat) travels to Vietnam to bring Mun (Tony Leung Ka-Fai) and Mun's father back to H.K while Mark-Gor's father is in danger on the Mainland.

Do I like this movie? Yes. But John Woo would have done it slightly better since his gunfighting action scenes are more stylish than Tsui Hark's.

I thought this was a great movie, but not as good as the first two! And Chow Yun-Fat is cool as always!

Ok movie. I think only for hardcore Chow Yun Fat fans. Not nearly as good as the first one.

Tsui Hark's "A Better Tomorrow 3" is often criticized since his vision for the series was much different than the previous two john woo ABTs. Hark decided to focus more on the relationship of the characters and thus created more of a period drama than a classic woo style bullet ballet. Don't think that there is no action because there are a few impressive action sequences that are worthy of the ABT reputation. Part 3 is actually a prequel to the first two classics and Chow Yun Fat plays Mark again, but the character has few similarities to mark from ABT 1. Actually sometimes he comes off as a bit of an idiot which probably further infuriates ABT diehards. This film does have a beautiful setting, some good action, and great music (Lowell Lo of course).

I think people would enjoy this a little bit more if they forget about the two previous "Better Tomorrows" and look at it like a totally different film.

YYou're right. This is a reasonably good film, but it suffers when thought of as a piece with parts 1 and 2. One might even say that part 2 slightly tarnishes the first film, but each of the three is well made and entertaining.Jeffrey Frawley

In my opinion, this is the worst one out of the whole series. 1 and 2 were awesome, 3--stay away from 3. The only redeeming part of this movie is the theme music.

This movie sucked. It had some of the worst shootout effects ever. Only good thing was Chow.
