| 'Fing's Raver' begins like a government information film about the dangers of drugs. Against a black screen a voice-over describes the kinds of drugs available to club goers. Cut to a scene in a nightclub where a young clubber, having taken a 'Fing' pill, suddenly collapses. The rather unsubtle way in which the message is delivered throughout the entire movie is really the main failing here. During an autopsy of a Fing victim early in the film, pathologists discover holes in the skull caused by excessive drug use. I'm not arguing that drugs can be dangerous but this sensationalist approach just ruins any credibility for the film.
Anyway, about the story. Brothers Sam and Wo (Sam Lee and Samuel Leung respectively) are lowly triad members who's 'big brother', Ben Chan (Karel Wong), is running a drug dealing operation in his own boss's club without permission. While Wo is enticed into the operation by the money, Sam refuses to have any part of it.
The club's reputation catches the attention of the police, led by newly transferred Dinny Lee (Loretta Lee), who begin to raid the club almost nightly. When the club owner, brother Bill Ng, demands an explanation from his underlings they conspire to remove him.
The subject matter is definitely potential for an engaging film but 'Fings Raver' doesn't seem to capitalise on it. The repeated club raid scenes are just dull as are the many dialogue scenes in the police station. Things only seem to get interesting in the last half hour when Samuel Leung's character finds himself in a bit of a predicament and Sam Lee is brought back in to the story, after being mainly absent, to bring about justice. However the cheesy epilogue ruins any positive impression that the film manages to make in the previous section.
Its not all bad news though as at least we get Sam Lee (sporting a mullet haircut) who always gives an entertaining performance, its just a shame he's not given more to do in this movie. Karel Ng makes an engaging villain but deserves a much better film. Samuel Leung is also worth a mention as the hapless Wo.
'Fing's Raver' was flawed from the outset but the slow pacing of the movie only adds to its problems. One for die-hard Sam Lee fans only. |
