URGENT NOTE: The picture and sound quality and the English subtitles on Mei Ah's Kurosawa DVDs are horrible. Apparently the Japanese dialogue was translated into Chinese, then the Chinese translated into English. We cannot accept returns for complaints of this nature. Please do not purchase these DVDs if you will be unhappy with their poor quality.
In a slum flophouse, a collection of beggars and thieves bewail their lot in life, and Osugi, the landlady, fights with her sister, Okayo, over the man they both desire, the thief Sutekichi.
Overview:
Between the dingy walls of their dilapidated flophouse, a motley group of down-and-out characters measure their hopes and dreams against the desperation of their shared situation. Based on the play by Maxim Gorky and transplanted from imperial Russia to Edo-era Japan, it features excellent performances, particularly from Kurosawa regular Toshiro Mifune.
