| Everyday is Valentine is produced, directed & written by Wong Jing (assisted by Raymond Yip in direction). Its cast includes Leon Lai as OK Lai (an estate agent & a compulsive liar) & Cecilia Cheung as Wonderful (a young OL who hasn't experienced her period yet in her early twenties) and a host of strong supporting actors, including Cheung Tat Ming & Matt Chow (as Leon's buddies); Ng Man Tat & Yuen King Dan (as Cecilia's parents); Moses Chan Ho & Pinky Cheung (as the elder brother millionaire & the luscious younger sister, respectively); Natalie Ng (Man-yan) & Kitty Yuen (as Cecilia's closest friends); and Hui Siu Hung & the long-absent Chan On Ying (long-time TVB actress) as the couple & Leon's boss. The movie was screened during Easter and had grossed over HK$10 million, second only to Master Q 2001.
Surprisingly, Everyday is Valentine is a funny and light romance comedy, never too crazy and, well, uncivil (given Wong Jing's past records). The movie revolves around Leon as OK, who has yet to meet a girl that makes him stop lying while falling in true love. Cecilia Cheung is Wonderful and a typical OL, who has a past record of dumping her boyfriends for their lies. In the end, Leon has to be truthful to his own feelings toward Cecilia & he has to embark on a long journey to Kathmandu to win over the heart of his beloved.
The movie features screenings at Macau and Kathmandu, an indication of quite a big spending in these days of HK moviemaking. But what's true is that the movie works well for me as a romantic comedy with surprisingly good performance by Leon, Pinky Cheung and Chan On Ying. That said, all the other supporting actors are good. And there are also special appearances by Kristy Yeung (as Leon's ex-girlfriend) & Eric Kot (as a greedy millionaire). More surprises come by when the movie features no overbrooding bad languages so commonly found in Wong Jing's movie. More than that, one of the marketing themes of the movie has been Leon's debut outpouring of "Pook Gai."
The DVD also contains the "Making Of" featurette & 3 trailers. Overall speaking, this is a well worth purchased movie. If you're not looking for some heavy stuff & you just want to spare 100 min. to watch a light love comedy with a star-studded supporting cast after a day's heavy work, Everything is Valentine should not fail you. |
