Great film in a great uncut version. But please remind it's not remastered.

Okay, it's not a perfect 5 stars. This version gets a 4.75. Sorry, I'm a filmmaker and I'm absolutely neurotic about my visuals. So when I see something like this masterpiece that's been cropped it hurts me in a very deep place. But the film itself is a 5-star effort.

Bad news first: it is NOT 2:35, blah blah, it's 1:75-something, so there's some cropping on the sides. It's non anamorphic. And the image quality pales in comparison with the butchered R1 version.

BUT, to this moment, it's the only way to find this class uncut and untampered, with the original soundtrack (be prepared to listen to the familiar Wong Fei Hong theme several times - happy happy joy joy!), so grab your copy while they last!

Despite the image quality shortcomings, THIS is the version to get - at least until a new, improved one appears. And then you double-dip right here, at HKFlix - where else you will find such delicacies, anyway?

Good to have this because it has the original Cantonese and music, which is always better than dubbing. Also I can practice listening to it in Mandarin. My only gripe is that the aspect ratio is not 2:35:1

It's great to see this film uncut, but I would've much preferred a Cantonese soundtrack as opposed to Mandarin.

Anyway, it's truly a shame that American companies that buy the distribution rights for foreign movies often can't resist the urge to modify or totally cut out scenes they don't like, based on their opinion on what's tasteful, or whether US audiences will or won't "get it." So if you like movies seen as they were originally shown in their home countries, please try to get the legal copies of the uncut versions whenever you can, rather than cave in and buy any re-packaged, watered down US versions.

Don't see the US version (aka "The Legend Of Drunken Master", with the especially bad English Anita Mui dub). Oh yes, and the music in the Chinese version is great; but like all other reasons to detest the US version, the music was cut for either some silent or exotic mess. So see this version, in its proper and original format and enjoy!

The Thakral disc's cropping does slightly impede enjoyment of the action [the original aspect ratio is ~2.35:1 and the Thakral DVD is presented in ~1.78:1]. Jackie and Lau Kar-leung's fight under a train is certainly harmed.

TECH NOTES:
Thakral's DVD package unfortunately does not match the quality of the film itself. The original 2.35:1 aspect ratio has been cropped to 1.78:1. While mostly clear, the picture is occasionally over-saturated and too dark. The audio includes Dolby surround and sounds decent. The extras are disappointing with only two trailers included.
