| Alright, I admit it. I LOVE Cheng Man! I find her witty, zany and wacky. And, she's one of the few Asian actresses who looks great in short hair. This is the first non-period piece of hers I've seen and overall I found it to be sweet, charming and warm. She and Andy Lau have a chemistry here as they both struggle to learn and discover feelings they have for each other---ultimately finding what they search for. But, this is a romantic comedy, so there's plenty of fun to be had. Notable scenes include Cheng Man showing her distaste for another co-worker by displaying a very ancient finger gesture--several times I might add. At one point a Chinese and white guy are at the police station being asked questions--nothing really special. Except the Chinese guy is speaking English while the white guy translate for him in Chinese! Another great moment is when Cheng's mother is at a party and gets a lobster stuck on the front of her dress---its claws clinging to very private parts! The characterization is great, full of laughs and the cast appears to have had a blast producing this gem. If you're not familiar with modern comedy, I recommend this as a start. |

| | | | | Pretty funny film about a rich boy, Andy Lau, who, after getting tossed off a boat, pretends to be an illegal Chinese immigrant and is adopted by Deannie Yip, who runs a family grocery store and also a part-time gambling cheat and sham healer. He falls in love with her daughter, played by Cheung Man, who happens to work at his company. It's a very sweet film, and Cheung Man and Andy Lau make a wonderful couple. Ng Man Tat, as the hapless assistant, is quite amusing-"I never knew $1000 could be so filling!"-and so is Wu Ma as the local sergent (sp? :\) with a few well-known secrets. Deannie Yip almost steals the film with her vivacious performance, and her love affair with Paul Chu. There's a few flat spots, esp. in scenes involving the millionaire guy, but overall, quite entertaining. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |
