| Not having seen 'A Wicked Ghost' I can't say how this compares to the first part. As a film in its own right (which it really is as it doesn't seem to allude to any previous story unless I missed it) I found it quite difficult to follow and not particularly scary.
The story begins when a police attempt to capture a serial rapist goes horribly wrong. The rapist is found with his legs and one arm hacked off while the arresting officer is found to have shot himself in the head. Soon after people involved in the case start having supernatural experiences that lead to their deaths. All the manifestations seem to be influenced by the victim's worst fear (hence the title).
Trying to make sense of these ghostly goings on is police detective Ken Wong and his assistant 'Peanut' who worked on the serial rapist case. For me to make sense of this I had to read the blurb on the back of the DVD case and even then it wasn't quite clear. It all has something to do with the ghost of a woman raped and killed a century ago coming back for revenge against the descendants of those responsible (I think).
The film does have a few spooky moments and some good gory bits but there just isn't any kind of suspense to make it really gripping. There certainly weren't any moments that made me jump, although there were a few attempts.
In between the spooky bits the film is filled with lots of dodgy psychology that tries to explain how people face fear - it didn't make much sense to me and seemed rather unconvincing although something may have been lost in the translation through the subtitles. Also annoying was the way in which just about everybody in the police force was readily prepared to accept ghosts as the explanation. Most annoying of all was the character 'Blue', the chief inspector's niece and expert on all things supernatural. Quite early on she fits into the role of adviser to the investigation and I just couldn't see any reason for anybody to take her seriously.
Fortunately this movie was quite short (1 hour 15 minutes) as by the end I had really lost all interest. There are few thrills to be had here and certainly nothing that is going to scare anyone. |
