To be honest, I wasn't expecting too much from this movie, maybe a silly HK triad plot and that's it. Actually, this movie is exactly what I look for in movies, the ability to change my state of emotion. The performances by the two lead actor/actress was terrific. The story was entertaining to watch, and it was told from the two men when "mountain chicken" Chan-Siu-Chun has accidentally bumped into a brother of an old neighbour's, "ah-gee" played by Gigi.

For a period after The Young and Dangerous success, it seemed like triad movies were a dime a dozen. With minimal plot, budget or intuitiveness. So like EKUŽ I went into this film not expecting much. While most of these types of films spend the majority of their attention on the actual triad activity, and throw in a side plot involving a love interest by one or more of the members - this film it is just the opposite. It mostly revolves around the actor's relationships with each other and just using the triad theme for an excuse to include some lame ass knife fights. But overall this is a recommendation. Especially since the film gets better as the time passes. And just when you want to hate this movie for a lame happy ending... you just need to remember, this is a Hong Kong Film. Good acting by Jordan and Gi Gi, an above average interesting plot, a little touch of fun factor, (mostly with the fun cameos), a side plot that seemed kind of pointless, but still worked, and a wild mix of emotions, left for a lot to be desired. While not on any classic film level, this movie still worked and was a good film for its genre.

Surprisingly, it has unveiled the innocence behind the familiar violence and bloodshed, so familiar with the Young and Dangerous series. The characters have matured, Ho Nam and Chicken have taken a backseat from street fighting. We are taken back to the old public housing where Chicken has grown up for some delightful scenes. The young and innocent drama has mostly taken place at those stairs; joy and torment are usually spelled out by a few words, contributing to the precious memory bank. But this touching act has been spoiled by the futile, yet pretentious romance is a let down.

After Portland Street Blues and Dai Fei, Chicken is another character with room to expand in the Young and Dangerous series. The story takes us back to the public housing in the past. Childhood memories of romance have overshadowed the gangland violence. The subtlety of love is downplayed, but his escape with the Taiwanese girl at the fishery has come natural and easy. With some good details and playful childhood scenes, the film offers little surprise in the mainframe, but has been a smooth outing.

Inserting the rich emotions of Portland Street Blues (1998, HK) into the character of Chicken, is merely deleting the line of friendship between him and Ho Nam. Surprisingly, there is still much room of development. And the story of the film spans over a few decades, and would cause sure confusion if merged into the saga of Young and Dangerous (1996, HK). But depicting him from the point of love, has given the audiences a fresh new perspective to a character whom they have a certain mind set towards, and this change is for the better. Chicken, like Jordan Chan in real life, is no longer the playful jester. And Gigi Leung is no longer the usual innocent girl next door. From her complex character change, her performance has taken another step forward from Tempting Hearts (1999, HK).
