| Released in 1982, and written by the great sea-to-shining-sea Cannonballer himself, Brock Yates, this movie offered a cornucopia of automobiles driven by some highly eccentric characters. Stars such as Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Terry Bradshaw and Jackie Chan grace the screen.
The group of cars and stars gather on the east coast to run all the way to California, some for money, some for pride, and some -- like the dopes in the pickup truck -- for redneck tomfoolery! Regardless of the goal, they must avoid plenty of "smokies" along the way, while outrunning, outsmarting, and out-conniving each other.
You've got hot (that's frumpy '80s hot) girls in Lamborghinis, fake priests in Ferraris, fake doctors in ambulances, acerbic middle-eastern sheiks in Rolls Royces, and karate masters in computerized Subarus. Hell, you've even got Roger Moore in a trick Aston Martin playing himself!
The entire cast has to avoid a "goody-goody" senator who's made it his mission to stop the Cannonballers at all costs. One participant hitches a ride aboard a tractor-trailer to outsmart the cops at a roadblock. The girls in the Lambo keep getting pulled over but use their ample busts and fluttering eyelashes to get out of citations. Others use emergency vehicle sirens and a sick girl on laughing gas to convince the police that they really do have a good reason to be traveling at 120 mph.
Pretty funny stuff from an all-star cast! |
