| Overview: | "Sex and Chopsticks - II", takes up from where it left off in the first one and follows the exploits of our protagonist Simon Qing as his quest for more women and more experimental sex keeps expanding. In the first part, the well trained Simon is shown to go to unexpected lengths to get the women he wants and even indulges in murder. However, his attention span wanes progressively and even though he gained his concubine, Lotus, it is not long before he starts looking elsewhere. This sets off a vicious chain of events as his hunger for power and women lead him onwards to plot more deaths and more outrageous sexual experiments. Adapted from famous 17th century novel "Jin Ping Mei" also known as "The Plum in the Golden Vase", unlike the extended silliness of part I, Part II explores the darker side of this classic story. While it maintains the style of this genre (old era, ancient costume, category II sexploitation film), it also shows us the depravity of the lead character. There is a sense of impending doom despite all the sexual shenanigans going around and once Simon discovers a surprise secret to his virility it all starts going downhill for him from then on. There is, however, no dearth of nudity or lovemaking scenes just as in part I, it is just darker and exposes more character depth. It also highlights the power struggles of his concubines with his wife Moon starting to feel neglected when he spends too much time with Lotus. When he moves on from Lotus to Pinky, and finally to Plum, his final concubine, one of them sets in motion his downfall. Nevertheless, in all the politics and murders and conspiracy that are taking around us, director Chin maintains the slow camera rolls in his sex scenes to set the mood whether it is light, sexy or disturbing. Overall, the sequel makes for a more compelling and deeper story and does good justice for the genre in general.
