It's a very nice film, that only Jodorowsky could have done. There are some very interesting scenes and characters, bizarre situations. But since it's not as good as "The Holy Mountain", "El Topo", and "Fando y Lis", I'm giving it four stars.

Very good film from the king of midnight showings. I saw this film back in '97 and I found it pretty good. But now, after seeing so many movies with the same kind of twist, the movie doesn't have the same impact that it used to have.

Very different from "El Topo" and "The Holy Mountain", "Santa Sangre" goes beyond the wakening of the inner self and rather shows a usual psychological drama. I liked it a lot. If possible, get the book "La Danza De La Realidad" written by Jodorowsky. It will get you to understand the relationship of Fenix and his father, which Jodo quotes on the commentary [in the version I watched].

A great film with some great extras (La Constellation Jodorowsky is a really good documentary), "Santa Sangre" is a both a departure from and a reflection of Jodorowsky's previous work. Rather than a surreal western along the lines of "El Topo", "Santa Sangre" is more like one of Dario Argento's giallo horrors. Given Argento's brother, Claudio, is one of the producers, this shouldn't come as a surprise, though Jodorowsky does state on the commentary track that Claudio had nothing to do with the script, and only came on board after the film was written.

As with "El Topo", dwarfs, amputees, tattooed ladies, etc. form part of the cast list, some in major roles, others merely background characters.

The cast are good, especially Jodorowsky's son, Axel, as Fenix, Blanca Guerra as his mother, and Sabrina Dennison as the deaf/mute Alma.

Thanks go to Anchor Bay (again!) for releasing an excellent Jodorowsky DVD. Here's praying his differences with the copyright holders of "El Topo" and "The Holy Mountain" can be resolved. They deserve to be released properly on DVD, especially as the never-prolific Jodorowsky is working on two new films, to be released this year and next, his first releases since 1990's "The Rainbow Thief".

Definetely one of my favourite movies of all time. And no, it has nothing to do with the fact that it was filmed in Mexico and I'm Mexican. Fans of Jodorowsky's cult films "El Topo" and "Holy mountain" may think they know what to expect from this genre-blender, but the Chilean born director may surprise them with this, his most accesible film to date. And by saying accesible, I don't mean it lacks the originality or strangeness of Jodorowsky's previous films, I just mean the film is easier to understand, and the characters are easier to relate to, than in "El topo" or "Holy mountain".

Prepare for a truly wild ride that succesfully mixes horror, madness, comedy, surrealism, and moving romance.

Jodorowsky cast real thieves, prostitutes, transvestites, and his usual array of deformed and physically challenged characters.

Fenix, the main character, is beautifully played by Jodorowsky's son, Fenix. The tragic love story between himself and the aptly named Alma(alma means "soul" in Spanish), is tremendously moving, one of the most romantic things I've seen on film. the music is absolutely fantastic, mixing the traditional Mexican music in the background(usually sung by a vagrant or drunkard), with a "horror" score reminiscent of Dario Argento's films-no wonder, since his brother Claudio produced this gem-, topping it off with wonderfully placed music by mambo master Pérez-Prado.

It's an exciting, scary, funny, moving rollercoaster of a movie. Absolutely unmissable.
