This was a really great, very twisted buddy cop (or buddy private eye) horror mystery comedy. Yes it really runs the boards between twisted slayings, hijinxs, and a really good mystery whose twist I wasn't at all prepared for; and after watching hundreds of mystery movies I fancy myself fairly on the ball when it comes to figuring out whodunit, but this one had me. It might be a little too out there for a lot of people, they may not enjoy the odd transitions between the comedy and the gruesome organ-snatching murders as I did; so be warned, I am a twisted duck.

This is another in a long line of Takashi Miike movies that I have come to love because they are nothing like anything else in his repertoire. I think a lot of people's dislike for Takashi Miike's works comes from how incredibly varied they are. Most start off with "Ichi The Killer" and then expect him to make every movie overflowing with over the top gore, and when the next movie they watch is nothing at all like "Ichi" they get upset. But it is his wild variety that defines him. From kids' movies to musicals to gruesome horror, all of them stand out with their quirks and personality. This movie is no different. The killings are almost all conducted off screen, with only the aftermath being shown. I think that really helps keep the movie fun. You can't have bodies being carved out and still make it funny. The detective's co-workers are great, especially Harumi Inoue, and his relationship with the uptight salary man who has the same name is the source of a lot of great laughs in the movie.

I suspect I enjoyed this movie more than anybody else, but this movie hit the hat trick of sweet spots of mine, which are strange, Japanese, and mystery movies, so it was great fun for me.
