This is a remake of the 1976 "Inugami Family", so the killer is the same in both, and the major plot points are the same, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the original.

I have a dodgy history with remakes. My rule of thumb is that remakes are always inferior to the original product. Yes, there are exceptions, my most famous example is John Carpenter's "The Thing", which in my opinion is vastly superior to the original; but the vast majority are the American version of "Pulse" or 2009's "Friday The 13th", which are complete disasters.

I liken this one to Tom Savini's "Night Of The Living Dead". The movie looks the same (okay the 1990 "NOTLD" took most of the political subtext out, but on the surface it looks the same) and follows the same path but jazzes it up a bit. In this version of the "Inugami Family", they clarify some parts of the story that were somewhat foggy in the original and update the special effects some. It's the same movie, sometimes I swear they have the exact same sets and everything, and if you liked the original you'll like this one.

In the beginning they replicate the opening scene almost identically from the original, making me worry that they were going to try a shot-for-shot remake like Gus Van Sant's remake of "Psycho", possibly one of the worst remakes in history; but soon it gets its own look and is enjoyable. It does manage to join a select number of remakes that are actually good.
