Plot:	Donald Sutherland plays an accomplished cardiologist whose pioneering work in the field of heart transplants is given a major boost when he teams up with another doctor who has invented a revolutionary artificial heart. Overview:	Dr. Thomas Vrain is chief of cardiac surgery at Los Angeles. Successful and accomplished, he is much respected and leads an idyllic, fulfilled life. However, when a favorite patient, Henry, rejects his new heart after what appears to be a successful operation, Vrain is deeply affected. At a medical conference Vrain meets Dr. Gehring who has been developing a revolutionary artificial heart. Gehring also impresses an elderly philanthropist who finances his and Vrain's further research into the artificial heart; they reach a successful stage whereby the only way to go on is for the heart to be tested on a human. But their application is refused by the Food and Drug administration. Carol, a 21 year old patient who has always suffered from a heart problem suddenly gets much worse and Vrain decides to operate--however her heart is too severely damaged and he realizes she will die. With her life in the balance, he decides to insert the artificial heart. The operation is a success; but has far-reaching effects on both Carol and Vrain.
