This film is not for everybody. It may not even be for me, but it is extremely well made and without question the most horrifyingly violent film I have ever seen. I have no intention of giving away the REAL plot, but anyone who chooses to watch it knows the initial premise. An adult woman who escaped from her torturers as a child takes a friend along with her when she seeks vengeance. It would appear that she does find her torturers. After that, things become more complicated and more horrifying.

If one can tolerate the extremity of the violence and pain depicted in "Martyrs", it is possible a lesson may be learned: it may be something about the psychological/moral/theological/mystical results of torture, or it may be nothing more than "I am NEVER going to France, as long as I live. What's WRONG with those people!?" I'm undecided.

N	I was really looking forward to this film, but I hated it. I think the violence was totally pointless and mean-spirited and I don't think there was a "real plot" anywhere.	Choco

Total mindfuck of a film.

The new wave of French horror films continues to dominate and break all sorts of taboos. This is hands-down the most shocking movie yet. Just thinking about certain scenes gives me the heebie-jeebies!

Y	Your comments are 100% correct. But I still don't understand what there is to "enjoy" in this film. Sadistic torture and abuse, that's it. What's to enjoy? Blech.	Choco

This is a film you will enjoy for the director's uncompromising vision or hate for the unnerving graphic violence. There is no middle ground.

Y	Somehow I'm on both sides simultaneously. The violence appalled me, I appreciated the skill which went into it, and ultimately felt uncertain the psychological outcome was valid. I gave it 4.5 stars, but can't say "entertaining" is what it is.	Jeffrey Frawley

Real different kind of movie. Not really a horror movie, but the closest way to describe it is a horror movie. Great acting and a great ending, which didn't seem like they were heading to it, but they did. Try it.
