| Overview: | Winner of 1970's foreign film Oscar, this jarring and potent film tells the story of a recently promoted Fascist police inspector who slits his mistress' throat. He then plants self-incriminating evidence and makes an anonymous call to report the crime. The police unearth clues that point to the inspector, but ignore them because of his high standing on the force.
An excellent look into the mind of a murderer, the film features an incredible performance from Gian Maria Volonte in the leading role. Director Elio Petri has made an anti-fascist statement that is both pointed and poignant, full of eerie, unsettling moods abetted by Ennio Morricone's excellent score. A piercing satire of Italian investigative techniques, and an interesting meditation on the relationship between class and guilt.
