| Fantastic creature feature more in the vein of "Brotherhood of the Wolf" (it isn't the greatest comparison, but its the only one I can think of) and less in the vein of something like "Grizzly", which is good but in that crazy cheesy kinda way. It's a thinking person's creature feature that pits men and one scrappy woman against a man-eating bear. This is based on an actual event that took place in Japan in 1905 where a bear killed 7 people in six days.
The middle of the movie can get a little confusing with it being a flashback to understand how everyone arrived to hunt the bear but it works. The movie looks amazing, being set in Japan's snowy north, it really has a great feel to it. The only thing I didn't at all like about it was the very 80s music (yes, even a fan of 80s synth-pop, I do have limits) because it feels out of place to hear music that sounds like Frankie Goes to Hollywood while Meiji era men go hunting for a man-eating bear.
Definitely a step up from your average creature feature. |
