| The minute I saw this on pre-order I knew I would have to watch this. I loved "Calamari Wrestler" and had a hunch that Minoru Kawasaki could probably strike gold again. And he did.
I will give the caveat that some will not like this movie simply because they are going to try and make sense of the plot that changes direction frequently, especially in the thirrd act, when the plot changes several times before finishing on a strange but happy note. My best advice is do not think, go along for the ride and enjoy this wacky movie.
I loved this movie from the beginning, mainly because I've always had a soft spot for koalas, even when they're schizoid axe murderers; but when he has the dream, that is a full blown brightly coloured musical number. The budget is low--probably most of it was spent on the full-size koala, bunny, and frog costumes--but if that gets in the way of you enjoying the film it is a shame.
This won't be a movie for everyone, but I love this kind of insane movie that seemingly only the Japanese have the gift for grabbing firmly with both hands and riding it like a rodeo ride into insanity. The only question they didn't answer, which I wished they did, was who gave birth to him--was she human or another human sized koala? |
