The rating says it all. Great swordplay.

This movie was more of a drama than a kung fu movie, but it was nice. I wish Adam Cheng had been more into kung fu. Nice story, though, good movie.

Pretty atmospheric swordplay flick. One of the best.

Good, especially for an older (1980) movie. I love Adam Cheng (from Zu).

It's one of my favorite swordplay-movies. I've seen it 1991 in TV and couldn't forget it. Now I own the DVD! Great movie!

For the longest time I had lost touch with the classics and this reminded me that wireworks aren't everything. The best way to describe this movie is "beautiful!" The camera angles, the actors/acting and especially the story are superb. The only way I can see this movie being compared to CTHD is that this movie is and always will be a classic. Don't be misled that the story is similar to CTHD. Get it for the plain old reason that this is a Crouching bargain Hidden Classic (I know that's about a cheesy as cheddar but I could help it!)!

If you enjoyed "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", then you will probably enjoy this tale, which is based upon one of the series of novels that inspired that Oscar-winning film.

While the budget was certainly far less than Ang Lee's offering, this film stands on its own as one of the finer swordplay films to come out of Hong Kong in the '80s.

Even with the budget restrictions, the director makes the most of it with a well-crafted story, good acting, and some surprisingly beautiful cinematography. The use of transitions is especially well-crafted (check out the red fade-out which transcends into a red wall, or the ending of the sword fight at sunset).

All in all, a VERY enjoyable film. My only real complaint is that it is only available as a Mandarin dub instead of the original Cantonese. Oh well, such is life.

If you enjoy the swordplay genre of Hong Kong films, definitely pick this one up. I think you'll enjoy it as much as I have!
