Oh dear. Perhaps I need help, or medication or something. I actually enjoyed this one. Based on a shojo manga, the premise is simple and rather hackneyed. Six wealthy and bored youngsters at an exclusive school get involved in mysteries and solve crimes. Cue "Beverly Hills 90210" and my rapid exit from the scene. But wait! This has a refreshing quality, probably because it's set in Tokyo not Beverly Hills, and the characters, although glamorous, rich and over indulged, are also kind of endearing.

Some reviewers have complained that the characters don't change throughout the ten episodes. Personally, I liked that. In "Yukan Club", the characters all stay true to type. This adds to the fun because, just like people you know well, you know how they are going to react in the given situations. The situations themselves range from the absurd (English-speaking terrorists taking over a TV studio) to the downright weird (demonic possession of a doll). However, "Yukan Club" doesn't take itself too seriously and, despite the exaggerated acting and opulent sets, there is clearly some talent on display here.

I agree that if you want serious and intelligent drama, you should give it a miss. On the other hand, if you have a sense of the absurd and want something colorful, undemanding and fun, you could do worse than try this. The highlights for me? I absolutely loved the Police Commissioner and his relationship with his son, the cool but emotional Miroku. The food-obsessed Yuri was also a delight.
