| "Philosophy Of A Knife" is a very, very, very, long movie that doesn’t have much of a story or a point. The movie starts with an interview with an old man that lived in the area during the time Japan's research base 731 was operational. The majority of the story is spent with a very calm narrator that gives a brief description of the research they are doing, then a very brutal demonstration of what the procedure was like. I personally would have been more interested on the segments on biological or chemical weapons, instead we just see a lot of physical torture with little understanding of the research being done. Also it is amazingly aggravating at the end of the movie to show the places and memorials in Russia and Japan with no translation. All in all, if the movie has a point I think it is this: be wary of the ways you fight demons, for one day you may find that you have become the greatest demon of all. |

I just cannot give any review of this movie, because I just watched 10 minutes and had to stop it. I cannot watch any more. I just hated it. Pretty grim stuff (considering it's based on real war crimes) but handled in a fairly intelligent manner by the director--the interviews with the production group are interesting in understanding the ambiguous nature of the atrocities portrayed. The direction is a bit ponderous and self-indulgent and the editting could have benefited by hacking off several minutes of repetetive material, but the overall end result is thought provoking, as well as a great gore fest. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

A true artist's vision of Unit 731, brought to film in a beautiful aspect. The downbeat atmosphere, soundtrack/sfx and some of the most impressive low budget gore I've ever seen all come together perfectly. This movie is not for the weak. Trust me on that. I liked the movie a lot when I saw it at the festival. The crowd and I were really shocked about the images onscreen.
