PLOT:
Four actors have just been starred in a slasher flick and arrive at a big mansion where it's supposed to be filmed. What they don't know is that the director has other plans for these actors. He plans to make an online snuff movie where the actors die for real - but will he succeed or will someone be able to stop him?
REVIEW:
When I found out that Bernard Rose, the director of two of my favourite horror movies, Paperhouse and Candyman, was returning to the horror genre, I was overly excited. Unfortunately, his comeback is far from strong and he has completely lost his touch. In an interview he said that he made this only for horror fans, well I'm a horror fan and I'm honestly quite offended that he thinks that unoriginal nonsense like this would impress a hardcore horror movie fan.
Snuff Movie is as unoriginal as the title suggests. It actually copies things straight out of movies like "My Little Eye" and the French slasher "Deep In The Woods". For example, when all the actors are having diner they are introduced to the director's son who's a bit strange. It's his birthday so naturally one of the actors say 'Happy Birthday' to him, without receiving an answer, recognize it? Well, he refuses to eat his meal and then jams his fork into his hand. The director's assistant takes the boy to his room. That scene was copied right out of "Deep In The Woods" and the story is a very weak mixture between that and, as I said before, the UK thriller My Little Eye where a couple of reality-TV actors discover that they're part of a snuff site.
I'm shocked that Bernard Rose could stoop this low. It's distasteful in every possible way and it tries so hard to be shocking that it just comes out as pathetic. There is no atmosphere in it at all and the suspense is completely absent. So why did I give it a rating of two? Well, if you overlook the fact that Bernard Rose, who's capable of doing much better things than this, directed this movie, it does have its moments and it never gets very boring. It's easy to sit through even though it's a bad movie and for that I give it some credit. However, I would highly recommend that all Bernard Rose fans stay away from this flick as they would most likely be hugely disappointed.
GORE:
We get an impalement, a decapitated head and surprisingly enough, very little more.
SOUNDTRACK:
All right, I have to confess that I loved the 70s score and the classical music but the fact remains that a creepy soundtrack could've helped this movie a lot.
BOTTOM LINE:
Bernard Rose disappoints with this unoriginal mumbo jumbo. It's not anything like his previous horror flicks and on top of that, it's incredibly cheap. Just don't watch this as both "snuff" movie fans and Bernard Rose fans will be disappointed. |
