| There's something about Japanese drama that I like. Or perhaps I have simply been lucky in the ones I have watched so far. Perhaps it's their ability to totally engage the viewer in the lives and emotions of the characters, or the fact that the characters themselves are so attractive--I don't necessarily mean physically, although this young cast are all pretty easy on the eye.
Anego, meaning "older sister", is the affectionate name given to the lead character, a 32 year old officer manager who mentors her junior staff not only in their work but also in affairs of the heart. It's a tribute to the charm and acting skills of all concerned that by the end of "Anego", I felt that I knew all the characters personally--and more importantly, liked them immensely, even those who had (ahem!) personality problems.
Ryoko Shinohara was outstanding as Anego. There is a luminous quality about her that is more than just good looks and personality. I was really rooting for her and hoping she would find her Knight on a White Horse--or eventually realize that he was right there in front of her!
I thought young Jin Akanishi, from the J-Pop band Kat-Tun, was also very appealing and sympathetic in this early starring role. I could easily understand why an older woman would fall for him, despite all the obstacles.
Yes, I liked "Anego" very much. It reminded me a bit of my other favourite, "Golden Bowl". A charming and talented cast, an always interesting and twisting storyline, plenty of humor and a few tears, all supported by a perfectly attuned and nuanced soundtrack. After watching "Anego" I had a huge smile on my face--recommendation enough in these dismal times I think. |
