ALTERNATE SYNOPSIS:
Set in Romania in the 80's--the final days of the communist dictatorship. Abortion and any kind of birth control before the age of 45 were strictly outlawed since 1966 under the regime. A prison sentence awaited not just the woman but anyone involved in aiding or abetting her. By the fall of communism, as many as 500,000 women had died from botched abortions.
Otilia and Gabita are roommates in a dormitory. They are university students in a small town in Romania during the last years of communism. Otilia rents a room in a cheap hotel. Gabita borrows money from her friends. They are going to meet a Mr. Bebe who would perform an illegal abortion.
4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days refers to Gabita's pregnancy, a fact she stupidly hides from the insidious abortionist Mr. Bebe, out of fear that he'll think she's too far along. Mr. Bebe demands not only money but also blackmails both girls into having sex with him in exchange for the procedure.
