| "The Warlords" is a tale of three blood brothers brought together by coincidence, in the midst of an endless war and political turmoil and intrigues.
Based on a Qing Dynasty story, "The Assassination of Ma", it was made in to a movie by Zhang Che in 1973, "The Blood Brothers".
Here, the roles of main protagonists are reprised by Jet Li as General Pang Qing-yun, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro as bandits Zhao Er Hu and Jiang Wu-yang, respectively.
Pang opens the movie as the only survivor of a massacre that has his entire army slaughtered while he escapes by playing dead. And after an encounter with a peasant woman Lian (Xu Jing-lei), he joins a gang of outlaws led by Er Hu and Wu-yang. Pang, not content with a bandit life, outraged by looting from soldiers and being looted and humiliated by rival soldiers, suggests joining the imperial army. The trio signs a blood pact. With the story unfolding, the blood brothers find their principles in conflict with each other's. The ambitious and unscrupulous Pang, whose military successes awarded him the court's attention, suffers little remorse when it comes to sacrifice. His growing love for Lian, who happens to be Zhao's wife, doesn't recognize obstacles.
Er Hu, the charismatic leader, a man guided by honour, defends his ideals in loyalty to his men. And Wu-yang - torn between the reason and conscience, fanatically adheres to the code of the brotherhood.
Once their status as an army is established there comes awareness that they are only pawns in a dangerous political game. Scheming high court officials have their own agenda using Pang against his friends. New alliances and challenges further exacerbate brothers' differences and put the brotherhood to the test.
Powerful performance from Jet Li has deservedly won him a Best Actor award. As General Pang he has revealed a great dramatic talent.
The characters of Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro are less developed and the latter's is rather shallow. Lau is excellent and convincing as gradually disillusioned general Zhao, while Kaneshiro's appearances in jumpy close ups are quite irritating. It is disappointing that Lian's character is fleeting and superficial. In the love triangle, she appears a mere pretext to dividing the brothers.
The film is beautifully shot in muted, sepia colours, emphasizing relentlessness and grim reality of war, only later briefly enhanced to strongly contrast the opulence of the imperial court. Battle scenes strive to be realistic. However, the one where Li upturns a whole row of cannons and slahes off limbs with a guandao, echoes his earlier choreographed fights. And pitting 800 men against an army of 5000 seems like a flight of fancy.
Nonetheless, it is a film certainly worth watching, if only beacause of differently treated subject of war; if only to see Jet Li in his best acting role. |

I liked the old Shaw Brothers "Blood Brothers" much more. Most of this movie is so grim and gray in palette that I had a hard time getting through it. Jet Li does a good job. Andy Lau is the wooden actor, as usual.-JT4324 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
I love the stars of "The Warlords". They are very talented and have great charisma. The movie itself is an all right epic tale of warlords. I say "all right" because it has moments that I have seen in better films. I am not saying this film is horrible, but it's been done before. The story is taken from other material, but again the actors were really great in the limited roles they had.-Ashley (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!| AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | N | Someone who writes fickle reviews as if they were 5th grade book reports has no business attacking anyone's intelligence. This is one of the movies where all the right ingredients nonetheless don't work as a work of art. Starring three of the finest East Asian actors, and in spite of an experienced director, this movie is a disappointment. It's dripping with meaningful looks and howling emotions and is just not very enjoyable at all. The production design might be very well done indeed, but the story doesn't come through. What remains is the memory of gory war scenes, a tired looking Jet Li, an exhausted Andy Lau, and the puppy-eyed looks of Takeshi Kaneshiro (and the question of why he had to wear that stupid fur cap all the time). But unfortunately that's just not enough.-KK438 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
This was an all right movie. The battle scenes were done well. The actors did a really amazing job. I just didn't get into the whole story as others did. But it was an all right film.-Black Belt Ninja (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
"The Warlords" was an alright epic battle movie with great stars and special effects. I really didn't find the film breath-taking or anything like most of the reviewers. But if you like epic battle scenes and stories then you'll enjoy this film. For me, it just fell flat because I have seen it before from other movies.-Rambo part 5 please (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!| AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | | KungfuManiac | | Y | I agree with your review. See Jet Li's best acting ever!!! I mean, he does steal all of the camera time from every single actor and got the highest pay for the film too. The action scenes aren't anything like his previous films and stick to a more raw and gritty war appeal, though there isn't much to begin with. Overall, watch the film, it's entertaining and Jet Li does his thing definitely.-Movie Freak (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!| AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | N | I did not like this picture, it was an okay film and all but I've seen epic battle films a lot & the action battle scenes just look the same. | JV47842 |

| An all-star cast offers another take on a tale of sundered brotherhood torn that was made famous in the 1970s Shaw Brother's production "The Blood Brothers."
While "Fearless" was marketed as Jet Li's "last" period martial arts epic, he's back in costume here as plucky Qing General Pang. He does have several fight scenes, but unlike past movies where his performances showcased his highly acrobatic skills, this role instead requires more dramatic effort from him. So there are many close-ups of his now middle aged face, lined and weary, and they very effectively convey the image of a warrior who has seen too much of the world's horrors.
Nonetheless, despite the many setbacks he faces, General Pang is a survivor and an opportunist, and he hasn't given up hope that his fortunes will change for the better. For example, in the opening of the movie we see a Qing Army annihilated by Taiping rebels, and Pang is the only survivor. We later learn that another commander deliberately shirked from assisting him and left his army to its fate.
Pang ultimately encounters a rag-tag bandit gang who rob to survive, led by Er-hu (Andy Lau), and Jiang (Takeshi Kaneshiro). However, after the gang is divested of their food by the same Qing troops who deserted Pang and his men, Pang convinces Er-hu and Jiang to join the Imperial Army, for they will not lack for food or loot, nor be bullied by other soldiers.
Thus, the trio swear an oath to become blood brothers, and ultimate leadership would go to Pang, who enjoys success after success. Of course, as in the Shaw Brothers version, there is a woman who will come between the two lead men.
However, in "The Warlords," Pang is a much different character than General Ma (played by Ti Lung) in the earlier "Blood Brothers," for Ma is unabashedly ambitious and unfliching in killing anyone who stands in his way.
On the other hand, when Pang does away with his enemies and rivals, he feels the weight of guilt on his conscience, and at least he tries to rationalize his actions as being for the greater good, and perhaps he really did mean well.
After all, Pang does not openly punish Er-hu when the latter challenges his authority at times, and he even weeps when he orders a massacre of Taiping prisoners, for his own army is hungry and desperately short on food. Moreover, even as a collision course is set up between Pang and his two brothers, corrupt Qing officials jealous of Pang's success are plotting to kill him anyway. This latter angle wasn't present in "The Blood Brothers."
The tragic ending is rather predictable, regardless whether you've seen "The Blood Brothers" or not, and yet this verson is worth watching for the credible performances, the high production vales, and in particular the realistic, extremely detailed battle scenes. In one of the early battles, Pang uses an interesting tactic of sending a forlorn hope of swordsmen to charge Taiping musketeers, a moving shield for the following archers who fire in support, therefore allowing the rest of army to close to sword fighting range. It's quite impressive to watch, and it's also cool to see the Taiping rebels fire muskets successively in ranks like well-drilled European professionals. |

A good movie--not great, but it does convey a gritty, dirty message about war being hell. This is not stylized fighting, like "Hero" or "House of Flying Daggers", but more like guys getting shot by cannons, faces smashed by helmets, limbs chopped off, etc. With that said, it's missing something. It's not as bad-ass as it should have been, Jet Li did a good job, as did Takeshi Kaneshiro, but I think Andy Lau stole the show in his role. The fighting is great, but there are long "filler" moments throughout the middle. The ending does make you think.-GC27573 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
This a damn good movie!! A great epic with fantastic actors and cool/brutal battles and beautifully photographed scenes. But the biggest surprise to me is JET LI!
Holy moly, this guy can REALLY act!
I never thought that he could be so good! But he really can!!! Anyway, this one is a MUST-SEE for everyone who likes big battles, dramas and epic movies. Pretty good dramatic war epic... Jet, Lau, and Kaneshiro are all really fantastic as 'brothers' who go from impoverished bandits and beggars to heroes as this historic tale unfolds. The film raises some serious moral questions that thankfully most of us would never have to answer. There is a bit of a romance element here which isn't quite fleshed out enough. The action is great though if you like sweeping epic battles like in Braveheart. Ultimately, it's really well put-together and can be added to the list of great period epic films from Asia. It's not full of impressive kung-fu fights as some might expect from Jet Li, but it's got some real gritty and brutal violence. This is more like a Saving Private Ryan than a Crouching Tiger.-MA47305 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!
What an epic. This is not only a great action film, but is definitely one of the best historical dramas that I've ever seen. Production values are excellent, and the performances are all top-notch. The battle scenes rival anything seen in "Braveheart". If you're a Hong Kong film fan, or a Jet Li fan, this movie is for you. Beware: this is not a martial arts film...and that's not a bad thing.-JE25224 (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

A must-see Jet Li movie with good story and action. Don't watch his movie called "War", because it's a waste of time. "The Warlords" is on par with "Fearless"!-mike lee (see my profile) LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW!

| Being a warlord amongst your blood brothers is a tough line of business. "The Warlords" is an epic movie, epic in scope, sound, set design and cast. The film is also a remake of a Shaw Brothers classic movie "Blood Brothers". Why remake that? Anyways, "The Warlords" is another epic war/costume flick--I've seen so many of these films, now with "The Warlords" it just looks like all the other war movies we've seen in the past. This film really does not showcase the war, there are only about three action scenes and they were not exciting. You'll also find the sappy emotional war music that we've all heard before. This movie is not about the war, it's about the characters. The cast is simply perfect for this movie, but if you're expecting a violent style action war epic you're in the wrong movie. Watch the flick for the acting, because it's another period piece. But then again we've seen films like this before. |
