| Plot: | Parodic psuedo-period epic, with Chow as Wilson Bond, a lovable con artist who finagles his way into the confidence of the Ming Court while fomenting a pro-Ching rebellion--and participating in frequent sexual escapades.
|
| Overview: | How does an uneducated, poor son of a prostitute rise to simultaneously become a rich baron of the Manchu court, as well as a high officer of the opposition forces? For Bond (Chow), all it takes is a little tact and ambition. It's getting his mother to change jobs which is the tough part.
Visually sumptuous parody of Hong Kong's recent swordplay epics, the smart aleck Stephen Chow succeeds as the improbably named Wilson Bond, a fast-thinking lowlife who gets caught up in one tangled court intrigue after another, pledging his loyalty to whoever is threatening him at the moment and playing all sides off against each other while trying to figure a way out of the incredible mess he's in.
In the process he gets involved with the saucy Dowager Empress (despite the protestations of his female guards, lovely identical twins who are promised to him should he finish his project successfully). This film features Brilliant slapstick. Ng Man Tat plays a wacky eunuch, funny as always but a little heavy handed. Cute Chingmy Yau plays the Emperor's brother. Great fun.
