| Overview: | In SALT IN THE WOUND, two condemned GIs (Kinski and Rai Saunders) on their way to execution and a fresh-from-West Point officer (George Hilton) in command of the execution detail survive a Nazi ambush and make their way to a desolate Italian village that lies in the path of the German advance. There they learn the meaning of courage and self-sacrifice when they become emotionally involved in the fortunes of the town's people and must defend them from the bloodthirsty invaders.
This unusual war film was directed by Tonino Ricci (NIGHT OF THE SHARKS, THE WESTERN KID). He co-scripted it with the prolific Piero Ragnoli, author of 96 screenplays including Corbucci's NAVAJO JOE, THE HILLS RUN RED, THE LAST ROUND and CITY OF THE WALKING DEAD. The impeccable cast features George Hilton, veteran of many Spaghetti Westerns (ANY GUN CAN PLAY, A BULLET FOR SANDOVAL) and giallos (THE CASE OF THE BLOODY IRIS), Kinski (AND GOD SATO TO CAIN, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, AGUIRRE, WRATH OF GOD), Rai Saunders (THE PRICE OF POWER, VIOLENT CITY) and Betsy Bell (SARTANA IN THE VALLEY OF DEATH). The effectively martial screenplay was the contribution of Riz Ortolani (DAY OF ANGER, MONDO CANE, CASTLE OF BLOOD).
