"The Family" harkens back to the days when Hong Kong cinemas had a glut of films and room for experiments. Not too many family films are being made nowadays, and as such, MY FAMILY now finds its footing as a window back into the days when less than "sure fire" product had a chance to be produced (in part because D&B, its distributor, needed films to fill its chain of theaters). While it's no gem, this quirky family comedy predates D&B's later family comedy series, "IT'S A MAD MAD MAD WORLD" (1987-92, featuring Bill Tung Bui, Lydia Shum Din Ha, Pauline Kwan Pui Lam, and Loletta Lee Lai Chun as the proverbial "family unit"), laying groundwork for the studio to learn from its mistakes.
