Chen Kwan Tai followed up his success in Iron Monkey with this thoughtful kung fu movie that relies as much on plot as it does on fight scenes.

Chen Kwan Tai plays a court official, Cool Head, charged with the task of investigating the murder of the emperor's wife. When a suspect is quickly found the case is declared closed but Cool Head remains unconvinced and, against orders, follows a trail of clues that leads him to a conspiracy to overthrow the government. Judy Lee appears as the sister of the original suspect, determined to prove her brother's innocence.

For the first half of the film the fighting is really pushed to the background while the plot is developed. This is a nice change from the usual revenge storyline so often used in the seventies. A major problem with the film, however, is that the audience knows whats going on from the very beginning and the sense of intrigue could have been greatly heightened had the details of the murder been undisclosed. However there are still a few twists to come later on in the film.

Chen Kwan Tai carries a certain amount of presence on screen but loses a fair amount of the limelight to the lovely Judy Lee, especially in the scene where her and Chen fight each other. As I was watching a dubbed version I can't really comment on the quality of the acting, especially as the dub job was one of the worst I've experienced.

While fight fans might be a little disappointed by the first half of the movie (there is a smattering of martial arts but nothing too drawn out) its worth waiting for the last thirty minutes which is practically non-stop kung fu. Chen Kwan Tai and Judy Lee battle their way through a maze of traps and opponents as they try to get to the villain's headquarters. This leads to a final showdown which, while not being one of the classics, is still exciting and entertaining to watch. The fight choreography is good but not great; for me personally there was not enough kicking, the action relying mainly on hand techniques although there is a small amount of weapons use at the end.
