| In the world of horror, there are two camps: one who believes that "Zombi" is Lucio Fulci's masterpiece, and then there are those who say it is this film, "The Beyond". I prefer "Zombi", it has a simpler story that helps with the overall flow of the film, but I can't deny that "The Beyond" is also an exceptional horror film. Here the gore does the talking with a series of memorable and infamous scenes, from tarantulas devouring a paralyzed man, to a dog biting out the throat of its owner, to the grand finale in a morgue full of zombies, the real main character in "The Beyond" is the blood that gushes and pours out of each and every victim. In between there is a plot, but it is dreamlike and does what it wants when it wants to. Truly it is a way to string together the gore, but in its own way it makes the movie work, giving it an Argento-style nightmare quality. The creepy Louisiana setting gives almost a Lovecraft kind of feeling, added to that the plot of the forbidden door to hell which would be something the Necronomicon would open. A true classic for any gore hound or fan of really creepy horror. |
