Loved this family, taking it on themselves to stop the monster that lurks in the waters. Come on, more please!

I just watched this movie for the second time, and you know what, it was pretty good. Some movies are just better the second time around.

"The Host" is the story of a giant mutant that I believe is derived from a salamander. The story follows Park and his attempt to find his daughter after the monster attacks the water side restaurant they live in. When the military blocks off the area as a biohazard and arrests Park, Park has no choice but to break free from a military prison and fight the biohazardous mutant to save his daughter. I am trying not to give too much information, but with such little story it is hard.

I found the story to be fairly long and drawn out. I think they tried too hard to make the main character, which it would seem should be sympathetic, instead just pathetic and stupid. Also the way the other characters keep coming in and falling out of the story at what appeared to be random intervals makes them very hard to understand or care for. Overall a little bit of a disappointment from a film with I expected very little of.

YI actually enjoyed the film much more than you, but I think all your points are valid, particularly that the film was way too long and that characters kind of came and went at random.Choco

"The Host" is a Korean horror film like very few before it.

All of the acting here is top-notch. Bong Joon-Ho’s direction is really great. He does a great job of combining comedy and horror. The horror scenes are well edited so that the horror is not overdone or cheesy. The story is good and, like "Godzilla", it shifts from being about the monster itself to being a commentary on how the government handles international crisis. The only real downfall of the film is some of its plot holes and inconsistencies. The anti-American sentiment is well received, but feels incomplete. I thoroughly enjoyed a lot of the horror action scenes, mostly due to the amazing special effects, good camera work, and skillful editing. The special effects to make the monster were simply amazing.

"The Host" takes ideas like "Godzilla" and improves upon them with amazing special effects, great visuals, standout performances, and wonderful storytelling.

Way more fun than "Godzilla". The smaller monster gives you a better sense of scale than a guy in a rubber suit smashing models. Some of the later scenes with the family get a little melodramatic, but the monster and its attacks (especially at the beginning) are fantastic.

Like it says on the box: "this IS one of the best monster movies in years"! Certainly more intriguing than "Cloverfield". Excellent effects and plot twists.

With breathtaking creature effects and some splendid set-pieces, "The Host" is a treat for old-style monster fans. With an amphibian mutation on the loose in Seoul, nobody seems safe.

Part action-drama, part comedy, this movie won't be to all tastes but it's an entertaining offering from director Joon-ho Bong. The film has a good heart and the plot's twists will keep viewers hooked 'til the end credits roll.

The pace is reasonable and despite a few puzzling touches, I'd definitely recommend this film. Not the best monster movie you'll see but a memorable one.

Surely a sequel is only a matter of time?

Picture "Little Miss Sunshine" meeting a "Godzilla" movie--that is what this film is all about.

"The Host" was one of my favorite films of 2006, and looking back on it today it's one of my favorite modern day monster movies.

What makes "The Host" different from other monster movies is that this film has a human quality to it. The audience gets involved with these characters from beginning to end. The action is great, and espicially the last action scene seems so much like a ballet. "The Host" is has a terrific score--it's haunting, almost. This flick is a great achievement in Korean cinema and it's a blast! I recommend this film to everyone.

Outstanding film! Purchased both versions and enjoyed both. Excellent graphics and visual effects. Fantastic new approach to pollution and its effects on nature and the adverse impact on mankind. I like the original version with English subtitles and the English dubbed version when I don't want to read the screen.

Pathetic attempt at some kind of horror film with slapstick comedic elements. Another Korean film with first rate production values and a story that makes no sense, creates no fear, and generates no compassion for any of the characters. Two of the worst "American actor cameos" ever... I can't go on. It is too depressing. It's like these people went to the Moe Howard School of Drama.

The Host takes a position in my list of favorite giant monster movies. It's got a startling and original fast-moving monster (courtesy of WETA workshop), some entertaining and moving Korean dramedy, and a cast of characters that you grow to like but that surprise you in the end.

Just a few minutes into this movie I was sitting breathlessly on the edge of my seat, and occasionally saying "Awesome!"

I don't often use that word, but it was the perfect one.

I sat like that for the whole movie, because it never let up and I was rivetted.

I don't want to give anything away, but one thing I loved was the family, the way they all fought bravely with everything they had to save a loved one in danger, even though generally none of the adults got along with each other.

I would have enjoyed this movie much more if only the story did not have the obvious political attack on the U.S. Some scenes also didn't make much sense, like the use of agent orange on the creature.

An interesting mix of thriller, horror and comedy. Though, ultimately to be remade by Hollywood (and probably ruined), you're better off getting the movie now and seeing it in its originality. Good acting and great special effects tell a story that will leave you waiting to see what happens next.

Great monster, quirky humor, nice character development. Really enjoyable take on the classic "toxic-waste induced monster terrorizing the city" genre. I got caught up in the hype and The Host delivered.

WOW! I went into this movie expecting nothing and walked out pleasantly surprised! This is one of the best, most original and one of the most scariest monster movies in a long long time. Highly recommended!

A great monster movie/government conspiracy/comedy/family drama hybrid. Sound appealing? I found it so. Every once in a while a film comes along, skirting the usual classifications. “The Host” is one of those movies. It’s refreshing to find a film avoiding the usual traps of falling neatly into one genre. I love the dark humor and subversive nature of this film. If you find dark humor, artsy symbolism, or not-so-cheery happenings distasteful, take about a star and a half away from my review.

In a previous review, I read something about how the movie sags in the second half. I completely disagree. These were characters I came to know and feel for, which cemented my interest throughout the film as suspense built. Suspense is the key word here, not action. This movie has more characterization in ten minutes than a typical U.S. horror film has throughout its entire length.

I do agree with the assessment of the usual monster movie fans being disappointed, as this is a very atypical monster movie. If you want to see a movie with a furious pace of action, with thrilling sequence after thrilling sequence, please go see the latest Hollywood extravaganza, where special effects will replace such nuisances as story and characterization.
