 | | | | Reality turns to fantasy in this depiction of a comic book (although I'm unfamiliar with the series). Two brothers separated from "the Gate Dojo" are reunited by a chance gang/vigilante encounter. Donnie Yen provides an excellent performance (if a little self gratuitous) when he enters the movie. As it moves along, the fantasy portion begins to take over. If you're cool with this, this is definitely something you can add to your collection. As DY begins to develop a reputable collection of films, this might fit in his category of "gotta' see it", at least thus far. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| "Dragon Tiger Gate" is based on popular HK comic book characters and is done in an over-the-top manner, as should be expected for a comic book movie. So complaints of ‘too much wire work’, ‘cheese’, etc are really somewhat misplaced in the context of the sub-genre in which the movie is placed.
Having said all that as a preface, "Dragon Tiger Gate" is a stylish movie with lots of tasty visuals. The fu in the movie is wire-fu for sure, but the choreography is generally very good, being done by Donnie Yen. One complaint easily leveled by fu fans is the relative paucity of the fu in the movie – this is largely a story-driven (if shallow) movie with fights of importance to the storyline tying things together.
There are some seriously slow moments if all you are looking for is action, but if you can stick with it the story and imagery is worth the sit. There are some really nice pieces of camerawork and cinematography in this movie – one example is the series of overhead shots of the pogoda fights about a third the way through the film. Whether done by crane in a set or with CGI, they are nice.
The three male leads – Donnie Yen, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Shawn Yue Man Lok – all do a fine job both with acting and fighting. Of course one needs to always keep in mind that this is a comic book movie to set aside the goofy hairstyles donned by the leads – truly bad ‘peek-a-boo’ cuts. Shaw Brothers veteran Chen Kuan-Tai does a turn as the bad-guy father-figure/boss to Yen’s character (Dragon), but his talents, both as an actor and definitely as a fu artist, are completely wasted in this role – too bad really. Yet in total "Dragon Tiger Gate" is a decent story, generally well acted; and the fight scenes, while relatively few, are quite solid as wire fu goes. Solid 3.5 star movie. |

 | | | | This doesn't do a whole lot for me. Donnie Yen's martial arts performance is good, despite being hampered by a bizarre peekaboo hairstyle. Nicholas Tse, despite a more normal hairstyle, fights adequately, but nowhere hear Yen's level. Shawn Yue, in a wig (I hope it's a wig) more or less as foolish as Yen's, isn't given much to do. The plot is much thinner than the martial arts choreography. | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | Mediocre at best | AH1706 | | N | No, this movie is a classic. I think the hairstyle was the comicbook's illusion, I believe. I belive this movie is four stars because they pulled the epic storyline off well, especially the martial arts scene at the end. I have to disagree. It's worth it. | I love you rater haters | | Y | you should of rated this a 3 1/2. A 3 1/2!!!!! BUT NOOOOOO! | | | | Many people underrate this film, but in a day and age where 90% of the action films are garbage unless done by Tony Jaa, I'd say this film was pretty damn sweet. Sure it may be a bad adaption, have bad scripting, or whatsoever. BUT!! Donnie gave what the fans wanted: MORE ACTION!! People complained "SPL" had few action scenes, so he gave us more action scenes and people still complain. This film is made for entertainment purposes, just like all of the Hollywood superhero films, so I suggest that you just shut up, sit back, and watch a visually impressive ass-kicking martial arts film. | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | N | I agree w/ u 99%. the problem I had w/ the pic was tht it was cheesy, I know it's suppose to be a popcorn pic & it succeeded w/ tht. The film felt like it was forcing it's entertainment value to the audience. I gave the film 3 stars because it was fun. | JV47842 | | Y | Man, thank you. | "Dragon Tiger Gate" is a martial arts/fantasy film based on a popular Chinese comic book series, and is directed by Wilson Yip and stars Donnie Yen. Although I never read the comic, [this film] has been described as not very consistent with the series to appeal to a more international audience resulting in it being a box office flop in Asia.
Donnie Yen does a good job with the martial arts side of the film, especially when working with the other two lead actors (Nicholas Tse and Shawn Yue) who do not have a martial arts background. The action was a bit over the top with too much wire-fu for my taste, but that can be expected from a fantasy film based on a comic book.
The director, Wilson Yip ("SPL", "Bio-Zombie") has always proved to be innovative and gives some impressive visuals in this one, but even that cannot fix the film's many shortcomings.
It's hard for this type of film to succeed without a strong villain, which was clearly the case here. Why should anyone care when he's that generic looking with no background information and doesn't even show up until 45 minutes into the show? He totally mailed it in until he kicked Turbo Shek and Tiger's ass resulting in Dragon (Donnie Yen) thrashing him later, which made all three characters look weak. In fact, Turbo and Tiger looked inferior the whole film. But why? Does Donnie Yen need that much of an ego boost after winning awards for "SPL"?
I know this is a film that you need to shut off your brain when watching, but that can be hard when it is not very entertaining. The worst thing that could have happened to this one is the high expectations that resulted with the insane comparisons to far superior films such as "Storm Riders" and "SPL". It's probably a good idea to skip this and watch "SPL"; and if you've seen that before, watch it again.
Somebody needs to offer an explanation on how this made it to Cannes. |

 | | | | I am a great fan of Donnie Yen and I was actually expecting this movie to wow me; but like SPL, this movie has let me down in that I'm wanting Donnie Yen to reproduce the style and grace he exuded on "Iron Monkey". His technique at delivering the precise attack at lightning speeds is what I am drawn to. The movie to me was slow and just had loops in it. Overall though the quality was good but the plot lacked. I'm also not sure about Donnie looking like he's in his middle 20's. I still scored it a 4 though. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Someone posted a clip of the opening fight from this film on the internet. Do yourself a favor and just watch that, because it's the only good part of the film. From then on it just gets more ridiculous. The story is really weak and the fight scenes get increasingly bizarre. I understand the concept of "suspension of disbelief" when watching film or television; but honestly, the action borders on comical. If you're a Donnie Yen fan there are a lot of better movies than this one. Try "Kill Zone" or "Iron Monkey". Leave "Dragon Tiger Gate" closed! | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | N | Did you not understand that this was based on a comic? | | | | This film is okay, it's based on a manga called "Dragon Tiger Gate", which I haven't read. It stars Donnie Yen ("Flash Point"--sick movie!, "Tiger Cage 2"), Nicolas Tse ("Invisible Target", "New Police Story") and Shawn Yu ("Infernal Affairs", "Dragon Heat") in the main roles. The story was okay but got really muddled and had some really bad special effects. The first half is awesome, Nicolas Tse gets to show off some amazing kicks and Shawn Yu uses red nunchuks with really cool moves, Donnie Yen is a bit dissapointing he throws no kicks, which is in my opinion what hes best at. Yuen Wah and Chen Kuan Tai are both wasted! Also Xing Yu (Flashpoint, Kung Fu Hustle) is in it but not for long, watch flashpoint or fatal contact to see him show off his great kicks. I'd say rent first then make your mind up, because you could be dissapointed!

 | | | | I'm one for everyone having their own opinion. I read a lot of reviews rubbishing this movie, so I held off watching it for awhile; but curiosity got the better of me and Donnie Yen is the man; so I sit down to watch it, not knowing what to expect, and to my complete horror I see a CGI wire-filled action movie--and, you know what, it was awesome. The story may not be the strongest, but who cares. It delivers well-choreographed fight scenes and oozes cool. Those of you that rubbished this film, shame on you. Don't hate on Donnie, embrace a true master at work. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| Many reviewers compare Dragon Tiger Gate with the previous SPL from the same team, Donnie Yen as Actor and Action Director and Wilson Yip as Director. And by doing that, this movie of course can't stand the comparison. But as SPL was a bloodshed drama with excellent fight scenes and DTG is a live adaption of a famous HongKong comic book, they shouldn't be compared as these two movies are as different as day and night.
DTG's fight sequences are very well choreographed and quite realistic, as far as comic adaptions go, exagerated at times with people flying a few meters after a punch or a kick, or jump a few yards of course, but hey, its a comic. Nobody complained in Batman or Spiderman. A surprise is also the rare use of CGI in the fights, there are but not like in Stormriders, Legend of Zu or Avenging Fist.
Donnie Yen tried more to concentrate on hand to hand combat and high kicks. Only in the final fight the fly and jump around or use some special skills.
Technically the movie is well made, with good cinematography and not so cheesey effects. The only negative thing is the story, the characters are coming out quite flat so the viewer will nerver get too close or really feel with them but with a running time of about 90 mins. and enough action it still manages not to get boring.
Not much more to say about it but after a few disapointing years in HongKong film making, Dragon Tiger Gate is , together with SPL a big step ahead and lets us hope that HongKong filmmakers are getting back their skills they where once famous for. Donnie Yen shows how it has to be and he could be the savior for the HongKong actionf ilm.
An entertaining and fun film, just do not compare it with SPL!! |

Well here it is!!! 5, get it, watch it, watch it again, and again...Enjoy everything about this movie. Love Donnie's mother for teaching him martial arts, love Donnie for taking his talents to the next statosphere! Love the promise this movie gives us all, that the martial arts world will still be alive, with or without Jackie or Jet. | | | | I was very excited about DTG and couldn't wait to see it. After my first viewing I felt a bit disappointed. It didn't seem to live up to what I was expecting. I was expecting another SPL I guess. However after a few more viewings it gets better every time. The martial arts sequences are really exciting. | | | | This is the best martial arts movie to have ever been released. It has the most intense fight scenes I've ever seen. When I heard that this was Donnie Yen's best movie, I didn't think much of it. Then after seeing it, I was amazed. The only downside of the movie is that it wasn't long enough. They should have gone into the character's story a little more. Other than that, I love this movie. This is the movie that I've been waiting for! | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| After reading certain reviews by viewers who blindly go into this movie assuming it will be something else other than what it properly is, I must say...some people just plain forget how to review a movie after they have seen it. I will not go into technicalities, but I will point out one of THE most (if not the most) important things to remember to regognize: GENRE.
As filmmakers, perhaps the director and the cast and crew had the singular vision of making Dragon Tiger Gate "better", or at least more entertaining than Sha Po Lang. But in dealing with the recognition of the GENRE (film category), I will fast forward to this conclusion: Dragon Tiger Gate is not necessarily a "better" film than Sha Po Lang; In fact, it is simply a different film from Wilson Yip's preceeding new-school martial arts crime drama.
Dragon Tiger Gate is a live-action science fiction martial arts fantasy adventure based on a very predominant and successful comic. It stars a diverse cast of actors both young and old, including Nicholas Tse, Shawn Yue, and martial arts legends Yuen Wah and co-star/action choreographer Donnie Yen. The movie supplies a very wonderful compilation of stories told from different points of view, dealing with romance, love, family, and the importance of humility.
There are elements in the film that are not explained fully to the viewer, which more than likely means that you would have to have been a reader of the comic book in oreder to understand who certain characters are and what their purpose is in the story.
The final battle between the three starring actors and the villain Shimbumi, played by Yu Kang and voiced over by Louis Koo presents a high octane and spectacular action scene with nice CG effects, grand theatrical elements and wonderful choreography and production values.
Finally, though standing well with cool scenic artwork, use of color, costume design, casting, action and direction, my only problem with this movie is its length. With a film as great as this, it should have been at least a half-hour longer; So to say, the film tends to cut corners which would have left room to understand some of the little details about the story itself, such as who certain characters are, etc.
Just over 90 minutes, Dragon Tiger Gate is a great comic book action movie that does what most Hollywood producers and filmmakers have stopped doing--That is, giving viewers a reason to care about the movie. Instead of trying to make a "cool" movie, Wilson Yip made a wonderful cinematic venture and provided a story that leaves room for poignancy, captivation, jubilation, and explosive martial arts action. And by the end of the movie, viewers will truly be satisfied of this film.
OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS: "Fist Of The North Star", "The Storm Riders", "The Avenging Fist", "Guyver: Dark Hero", "Death Trance", "Iron Monkey", "Legend Of The Wolf", "The Princess Blade" (a.k.a. "Shura Yukihime"), and "Sha Po Lang". |

 | | | | Absolute waste of time and money. This was advertised as better than SPL? What a joke! Pointless story, uninteresting characters, bad fight editing, ridiculous wire fu, and even worse CGI (but what did you expect?). Go see SPL instead. Oops, I mean KILLZONE. | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | N | I disagree. I thought is was entertaining and I loved the martial arts action and special effects. Keep in mind this movie is based on a comic book, like Batman and Spiderman. It is not the best asian super hero movie, but it is certainly not the worst! | Sgt. T |
