| Overview: | Pop singer Miriam Yeung came into her own as a leading lady with the modest box office success of last year's Dummy Mommy Without a Baby. She followed that up with Love Undercover, another popular romantic comedy.
Dry Wood Fierce Fire trods a well-worn path. Two magazines are merged into one, forcing the formerly all-female and all-male staffs of the respective magazines to work together. Miriam Yeung plays Alice, a woman with some off-beat character traits. She finds herself attracted to Ryan (Louis Koo); sadly for Alice, Ryan is more interested in their new boss (Flora Chan). So as to spend time with Ryan, Alice tries to teach him how to be more attractive to women, while Ryan tries to help her soften up a bit. You can probably figure out what happens with this kind of love triangle established.
Yet the journey to the predictable ending is pleasurable. While perhaps not the funniest comedy around (you may smile more than break out laughing), it does offer some engaging performances in a variety of relaxed settings, with the added bonus of cameo turns by several well-known Hong Kong players.
Directed by Wilson Yip, whose impressive resume includes Bio Zombie, Bullets Over Summer, Juliet in Love, and 2002.
