| Yo, mates! If Shakespeare was Chinese he'd have written this witty, funny and enjoyable yarn. This is a wonderful retelling of an old legend about the mischievous tricks of Fox Spirit and her poor victims. Not much wuxia but plenty of great dialogue, interaction, comedy and acting. Anita Mui does a superb job portraying a hyper worrying Emperor, his great grandfather's spirit and dressing as a woman in an attempt to escape invaders. Anita's facial expressions, ranting voice and over the top behavior is a joy to see as is the multitude talents she displays. Sammi as the warrior woman is a very nice contrast to Cecilia high pitched whine and fret. Cecilia displays her comic skills as posing as a man in love with Sammi, and a spoiled, manipulative concubine bent on stealing the Emperor's heart. The banter between these characters is a constant source of belly laughs. I especially like the parody about the Olympics, slow motion fight between Sammi and the Emperor's general, and the bungling Emperor's grandfather who's spells backfire. Costume, sets, script and production values place this gem above most others---both in the west and east. I hope more movies of this caliber are produced. I give this 2 thumbs up---and a third if I had an extra hand. Cheers! |
