| Another gore-drenched Shaw Brothers black magic movie. This movie is the tale of a female police officer who gets possessed by a dead spirit out for revenge for really awful--I mean it doesn't get more awful than what happens to her--crimes committed against her during the second Sino-Japanese War. There is a taste of "Carrie" here, a woman using her supernatural psychic powers to get even, but after the first few incidents it turns into a much more straightforward tale of revenge from beyond the grave.
I do love how most Asian ghost stories are almost always universally horrible, you do not want to meet a ghost because the end result is always tragic and usually gory. There are no Caspers here, no "let's have fun going ghost hunting". If you meet a ghost, not only will you die but your love ones, friends, the milkman, and the guy across the hall all die. Bleak and tragic but also trippy and creepy, complete with bugs, you can't have a black magic movie without the bug. |
