 | | | | Creepy haunted psyche movie. It isn't a real nailbiter ghost story, rather a slow boil of the ghosts within one's own mind. It has some creepy moments but overall it lacks a certain terror I was hoping for. I am a big Kurosawa fan, I love "Pulse" and "Seance", I even love "Guard From The Underground" and "Robokill Beneath Disco Club Layla" (possible owing somewhat to the very wacky title), but while that is an excellent haunted kind of movie, you expect this more on the windswept moors or in some gloomy crumbling gothic castle, but was either too long in some parts or not spooky enough for me to really embrace it as much as his other work. It is still a very good movie but I was hoping for a smidge more. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Reading the description for Retribution one might think it is the standard Japanese ghost story with long haired woman and obsessed dectective. You would be wrong. Kiyoshi Kurosawa never does the expected. His characters are rich in detail, and his photography is surreal and beautiful. Kurosawa also is a master of the punchline. This film is no exception. My biggest problem with the film is it is not a scary ghost story. There are cheap thrills, and spooky moments, but the terror is deeper than JUST a ghost story. It is an amazing mystery with superb acting beginning to end. Highly recommended for ghost/horror fans but more so for mystery fans. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |
