| Detective Sergeant Jun Ma (Yen) plays a hard-hitting cop who talks with his fists and isn't intimidated to break some heads to complete his job. Good as he is at his job, there is one Vietnamese gang that has eluded the scales of justice. In order to get some leverage on them, he plants a mole, Wilson, (Koo) to infiltrate the gang and after years of service gains their trust. Things go wrong when a big bust of the gang begins. Wilson's cover is blown and becomes the target of the gang. It's up to Dective Ma to protect his partner and to remain within the limits of the law.
"Flash Point" won't dethrone "SPL", but it is a good action movie. The only flaw is the plot lacks originality, but it's fresher than most of the other corrupt cop scenarios. It's lighter on the story than "SPL" but lacks a signature fight as between Wu Jing vs. Yen and Yen vs. Sammo. As far as the action goes, it isn't a bonanza loaded with kung-fu, but what action is there is enough to get one's blood pumping.
There are only two main fight scenes to mention where Yen adds a touch of originality, incorporating MMA mixed martial arts in his choreography, utilizing grappling and trapping rather than his signature kicks. This works exceptionally well for the film's atmosphere and final showdown between Yen and Chou, which is quite impressive, and reminiscent of the fight between Ken Lo and Jackie Chan in "Drunken Master 2" where both combatants give it their all for the price of victory. "Flash Point" isn't a perfect movie in the classical film sense--it could be better, it could be worse--but it is a good movie that doesn't shortchange the viewer in any department. "Flash Point" is definitely a step in the right direction, and I look further to future collaborations between Yen and Yip. |

| This is not a movie that wants you to watch it because it has an incredible story or deep and fascinating characters or incredible plot twists. No, this is a movie that wants you to watch it because it wants you to be entertained by the awesomeness of its action sequences.
It's true, the movie does lack action in the front-half. But the story is good enough that it's not painful to sit through. It certainly isn't boring. Straightforward, sure. And the characters aren't unique. But it's not bad at all.
The bottom line is that when the action comes, it comes with a vengeance. Donnie Yen has flirted with incorporating the MMA/UFC-style into his movies. And in this one, he brings it strong, alongside his always-flawless kung fu skills. The bad guy in this movie is the guy who played Seraph, the guardian of the Oracle in the 2nd and 3rd "Matrix" films, the only guy with some real kung fu talent. So when he and Donnie get it on, it's as good as you've ever seen it. The gunfights are great, the fist fights are even better.
If you're looking for a top-notch martial arts film or you're trying to find one of those "HK action movies" that you've heard so much about, this is definitely one of the ones to see. No two ways about it. |

| Wilson Yip and Donnie Yen definitely redeemed themselves after the box office flop, "Dragon Tiger Gate". Thankfully they return to kung fu/crime drama which is a genre they excel at. "Flash Point" is a very good movie that does not quite reach "SPL" heights, but it is probably unfair to compare everything to "SPL". My main reason is that the character development was not as good, and I would take Sammo Hung and Simon Yam over Louis Koo and Collin Chou anytime--not that they didn't do a good job.
Of course the highlight of the film is the action choreography of Donnie Yen. Yen added MMA fighting to his already dazzling kung fu repertoire and Collin Chou also gave a good preformance in the long bone-crunching finale. The action was very realistic and intense, as I thought I heard some of my bones snap when viewing. Along with the fighting, there were some impressive foot and car chases.
The only problems I saw were the lack of character development (i.e. OCTB squad members, especially the female), Louis Koo not selling his leg injury to the level of being "crippled", and a pistol that can fire 16 shots in an elevator without the need of another clip. These are just minor flaws as I can't find too much to gripe about. Good film with hopefully more like it on the way.
Finally, it was also great to see big Kent Cheng back on screen, as I think he is a truly great actor and very underrated. |

 | | | | The last action scene saved this picture. The movie was all right and then the final 20 minutes it explodes into something really great. I guess you always have to wait for something amazing. The movie taught me to be patient and I got a really impressive pay-off. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Donnie Yen shows why he is commonly considered the best in the biz right now, he really shows off his wide range of talent in this film. The action here is top notch, including the final duel which is already in my top ten fight scenes. This should not overshadow Donnie's acting, he is at his best here and you can really relate to what he's going through. Honorable mention would have to go to Collin Chou who matches Donnie in action blow for blow. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | A decent action flick with some good mixed martial arts choreography from Donnie Yen. It's not as good as "SPL" ("Kill Zone"), but then again that flick is a hard act to follow. A few slow parts but overall a decent movie, and if you're a Donnie Yen fan then you wont want to miss this. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | Solid police drama presented by the same team that brought us "Killzone" ("SPL"). Donnie Yen has certainly proved that he is one of the best fight choreographers in the business, evidenced by one of the greatest end fights of all time between Donnie and Ngai Sing! Most people laud this film for the end fight and may urge you to fast-forward through the slow parts. However, I enjoyed the plot and character developement leading up to the main event. Louis Koo was excellent as Donnie's undercover partner trying to infiltrate a gang of smugglers led by three hard-as-nails brothers. Once Koo's cover is blown is when the movie starts to take off. We see Donnie walking the thin line between Bad boy cop and serious vigilante as the three brothers try to kill Koo and all he holds dear. I would classify this as a police drama with one hell of an ending, and not an actual action movie. | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | Good review- Flash Point does have one hell of an ending- i agree. | JV47842 | | Y | Good analysis. | Donnie Yen is the Spencer Tracy of the martial arts film industry. In the 40s and 50s, Spencer Tracy was the go-to guy if a movie needed someone to play a wise politician, sidekick, attorney, businessman, or all around father-figure type. When Spencer Tracy spoke in that voice, oozing sincerity and authority coupled with a little hint of crankiness to it and the squint in his eyes, you just about believed in what he said. What Spencer Tracy did, he did well.
Donnie Yen falls into the same category. If you want somebody to play a hard-ass cop who isn't above going beyond the rule book to take down criminals and using some incredible martial arts skills in order to do it, Donnie's your man. From movies like "In The Line of Duty 4", to the "Tiger Cage" movies, up to and including "SPL", Donnie has the pugnacious, angry, intense, physical, and rebellious cop role down pat.
"Flash Point" isn't so much a movie about two cops taking down a trio of brothers who are up to their necks in crime and violence, it's a giant setup for the last 20 minutes of this movie so we can watch Donnie strut his stuff. When Donnie's eyes get wide and his mouth screws up like he's about to spit something out, watch out, it means he's about to lay some serious hurt on someone. Case in point: in the middle of the film, he's chased the bad guy to an outdoor eating area when the bad guy grabs a kid and tells Donnie to drop his gun or he'll kill the kid. Donnie complies, at which point the bad guy throws the kid aside, letting the kid land on her head and is either dead, or in a coma. Donnie looks at the kid, his face contorts, the camera zooms out, and Donnie proceeds to work the bad guy over.
That scene was just a taste for what happens near the end when he goes toe-to-toe with Collin Chou. This fight scene hurts just to watch it. In this movie and in "SPL," Donnie has stated that he wants to bring Mixed Martial Arts to the screen so as to make martial arts movies look more realistic and at the same time, more exciting. He feels that CGI and wire-fu have had their day and that it's time to get back to basics. It looks like he's succeeded. Like Spencer Tracy, what Donnie Yen does, he does well. I hope he keeps on doing it. |

 | | | | Good modern day cop movie with Donnie Yen taking on the bad guys. Stylishly made film with decent story and high quality action, as you would expect from the "new big boss", Donnie. Could have done with a bit more fighting, but what their is is top notch. All in all a well made enjoyable movie helping cement Donnie's rightful place as the heir to Jet/Jackie/Sammo's throne. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| This film is a bit like an action version of "Infernal Affairs" (what it lacks in as dramatic set pieces it makes up for in all out action).
It approaches all of its fight scenes with an innovative and realistic style.
Donnie's Fight scenes must be seen to be believed--you will be rewinding these scenes several times because you will be mesmerised by what you have seen.
This film will remind you why Donnie is a martial arts superstar if you've forgotten.
What Donnie has done in this movie is make you feel like the first time you saw a Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Jet Lee and Tony Jaa film.
I've been a big Donnie Yen fan since "In The Line Of Duty 4", but he did under-perform until "Iron Monkey".
One thing about Donnie is his martial skills are so good that no matter how he under-performs he will still leave a massive impression on you (e.g. "Holy Virgin Vs. Evil Dead).
A must-see for fu fans. If you're not familiar with Donnie Yen, then after this film you will be a fan and will want to check out his back catalogue. |

 | | | | Based on early reviews, I had lowered expectations going into this sort-of-prequel to "SPL". Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised. Donnie Yen, Louis Koo and Collin Chou (Seraph from 'The Matrix Reloaded') really put on a great show. The plot is thin but the characters are great and the action feels fresh and real. Speaking of action, I am not a huge fan of UFC or other cage fighting. Donnie likes UCF though and he’s done a great job of translating MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) into "film fighting". He’s been working long enough with the best directors and action coordinators to know what looks good on screen. He put a tremendous amount of effort into the action and, along with director, Wilson Yip, really drove the other actors and his hand-picked stunt team to give it everything they had. The effort shows, making this an easy recommendation to action fans. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

| Donnie Yen... It's now time to crown him the heir apparent to Yuen Wo-Ping as far as film choreography.
"Flash Point", hot on the heels of "SPL", is another step--make that leap--ahead in action. The battles that take place here are so realistic, you find yourself wincing as in a horror film, and feeling the performer's pain. The plot is very thin, and if you look closer, this may have intended to be some sort of indirect sequel to "SPL", as Yen's character is another rogue cop and is reckless in his hard-assed approach to dealing with the baddies. Louis Koo is good as Yen's partner, and he seems to reel the film in somewhat until the end.
What fans will really get excited about is the finale, the showdown between Yen and Colin Chou, Seraph from the "Matrix" sequels. The mixed-martial confrontation from these men is so adrenaline-packed, nothing outside of the showdown between Sammo and Donnie in "SPL" comes close.
This is a film to watch just for the popcorn action, like a Jackie Chan actioner, not to be taken too seriously. Just enjoy the fighting. |

 | | | | This film had a bit of a confusing plot, but the action was exceptional, as should be expected from Donnie Yen. | This is a great action film. Although there are only two real fights in the film, it never gets boring, and when the fights come they are some of the best ever put on film! Donnie Yen, the star of "Tiger Cage" 1 and 2 and "SPL" shows again he is the man! He uses new mma moves, mixing it with his trademark kicks, also a great gunfight before the end fight between Donnie Yen and former Sammo Hung stuntman Colin Chou ("Matrix Revolutions", "No Problem 2"). The end fight was rumoured tio be better than the alley fight between Yen and Wu Jing ("Invisible Target", "Drunken Monkey"). I was kind of like, "I hope it is but doubt they can match that." Well, they went and proved that they can top that fight! The end fight with Colin Chou is a great 10-minute fight featuring great stunts, kicks and mma. Louis Koo ("Rob-B-Hood", "Bullets Over Summer") is famous for his fake tan and modeling, but he is also a great actor and gives a good balance to Donnie Yen's charecter. The bad guys are great. Apart from Colin Chou you have Ray Liu ("2000 A.D.", "Project A 2"), he plays the eldest of the three brothers; the youngest brother is played by mainland martial arts master Xing Yu ("Kung Fu Hustle", "Fatal Contact"). Xing Yu studied the 12 tam kicks and Shaolin kung fu for ten years! His fight with Donnie Yen is incredible, I just wish it could have been longer! Ray Liu is good as the evil and no conscience guy. The bad guys could have been really two-dimensional, but director Wilson Yip ("SPL", "Dragon Tiger Gate") shows that the bad guys have families of their own and so this really makes the film stronger. Also the love interest with Fan Bing and Louis Koo is done well enough so it doesn't get boring or slow the film down but adds more depth to the film. This is the best action film from Hong Kong for the last five years hands down. Please do yourself a favor and go and buy it! Thanks for reading! |
