While not the real murder mystery I was expecting, I was still extremely pleased with the results. I love how the main villain in the movie is the Happy King--really? The Happy King? Probably a really good cover; nobody would expect the Happy King to be an evil usurper of thrones and killer of kings--that is until he does it and you realize the error of your ways.

David Chiang is his usual charming self, which is always welcome, his kung-fu isn't stellar but his personality more than makes up for it.

I really love the kung-fu movies that go the extra mile to be different. From poison treasure to double-triple-quadruple-crossing, to an array of memorable locales, this is more than your usual temple/field/inn setup. The plot keeps you on your toes and makes you pay attention with the ever-shifting alliances and I enjoyed that. Not a typical kung-fu movie, which will be a welcome change of pace for those who want kung-fu but want it a little different.

Good feature directed by Chor Yuen and based on a Ku Lung novel. Like all movies based on Ku Lung novels, this one has plot twists and turns with the best of them. Beautiful Shaw sets and great action make this one worth seeing. David Chiang is good in the lead and Lo Lieh is outstanding as the villain! Also good eye candy in the forms of Yu On-On, Ching Li, and Chen Ping.

All-star cast: Wang Lung Wei, David Chiang, Lo Lieh--what more can you ask for? You should have this in your library.

The storyline gets complicated throughout the movie, with a few twists (don't watch it at midnight!). The action, mostly swordsplay, is pretty good though. Nice Shaw sets. I'm not David Chiang's biggest fan but he performs well here. Notorious villain Wang Lung Wei only plays a secondary role here. It's worth watching.

This is a mystery/swordplay flick. It's not bad--confusing at first. It's story-based, with sword fights and poisons being used, and some hand-to-hand combat. The camerawork is somewhat different--not the movements of the camera, but the placements are somewhat different form other Shaws, like putting things in your view like leaves and whatnot to make it more artsy I guess.

If you're a fan of David Chang and/or mystery films, check it out.
