Cashback [2006]: Technical Notes

Technical Notes Technical Notes:
Cashback [2006]

This one-disc release comes packaged in a standard keepcase, and features a subtly animated full-frame main menu, with options to watch the film, adjust subtitles, select scenes and check out the special features. There are no audio options, though subtitles are available in Spanish, and English closed captioning.

The Quality
The anamorphic widescreen transfer for this film looks very nice, though it can come across as a bit soft in places, as the image isn't always that sharp. The level of detail is very high and the color is bright and bold, befitting such a visually impressive film. There's not a bit of obvious dirt or damage in this film, and they managed to make the old short-film footage match well with the newer feature-film footage.

The Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack is solid, but in no way a powerful mix, though there's some occasional separation between the channels that stands out. Dialogue is consistently clear and distortion-free, while the music is also delivered well.

The Extras
Just two extras here, but both are pretty substantial. Up first is a 19-minute featurette about the making of Cashback, featuring sit-downs with the actors and on-set footage. Along with a look at the film's scoring sessions is the uncut footage of Ben's girlfriend's outburst, which answers some questions you may have. Unfortunately, since it covers production of the feature film, and not the short, there's nothing about the amazing phone-to-bed transition. It's slightly fluffy, but there's some insight into the making of the film included as well.

The other extra is the original short film. Now, considering this film is a part of the feature film, included in its entirety, it might seem odd to have it here as an extra, but there are some changes, namely some scenes involving a Swedish exchange student that aren't CGI'd in the short. For the pervier film fans among us, it makes a big difference. It might be worth watching the short first, as a type of prequel, before moving on to the feature film.

The Bottom Line
The DVD looks and sounds very nice, and the scant few extras have their own value also.
