The Plot: Three mainlanders (Shing Fui-On, Chow Yun Fat, and Eric Tseng) flee to Hong Kong with the aid of some truly ridiculous devices, like tiger dung -- there are many silly, gross scatological jokes. Separated in the swim, one (Chow Yun Fat) ends up being picked as the instrument of vengeance by a recently-jilted boyfriend (anyone?). This guy hires Anita (Anita Mui) to transform Chow Yun Fat into a playboy, so that he can then break the hearts of the two women who've taunted and humiliated his boss.

Why Would I Like This Movie? A charming story, fine performances, and good comedy make this film worth watching. But don't expect much more than light-hearted fluff.

Why Wouldn't I Like This Movie? North American fans may find it difficult to laugh during the many scenes featuring Chow Yun Fat learning English -- I can imagine HK audiences laughing in sympathy, but for me it mostly provoked awkward silence hearing the beginner's English of both Chow Yun Fat and Anita Mui. Also, there is (yet more) anti-Indian racism, as well as a couple of scenes featuring sexism, and homophobia.

Pretty Woman in reverse. Chow is an uneducated refugee from the mainland who is transformed by billionairess Anita Mui into a cultured gentleman. Anita (Anita Mui Yim-Fong), who ends up falling for her creation, is outstanding and Chow Yun Fat is charming in his portrayal of a sentimental mainlander under the harsh spotlight of high society.
