| I'm not a huge fan of the "pinku eiga" genre, but I will occasionally watch them if they're recommended or sound particularly interesting. Well, that certainly applies to this film.
Our heroine Sachiko is a beautiful, curvaceous prostitute (who is clearly a detail-oriented professional) that is shot in the head when a North Korean terrorist attempts to steal the cloned finger of President Bush from two underground dealers in a resturaunt. Do you get the feeling that you must have misread that last sentence? No, you read it right; and no, I'm not kidding. Whoever has this finger can use it to launch nuclear missles from hidden silos, so it's a tool that power-hungry wackos covet. Meanwhile, Sachiko doesn't die from her injury, and while exploring her new hole with an eyebrow pencil (who wouldn't, right?) she nudges the bullet deep into her brain stimulating it in a way that makes her an instant genius. She begins to soak up knowledge at an astounding rate, while her senses have been damaged, causing severe delayed reactions to stimuli. This is a fun set up for some very humorous scenes.
The movie is played straight, which makes it much funnier. And despite the typical perception of low-brow entertainment that you'd expect from a film that features softcore sex, the acting, script, and cinematography are top-notch, wildly original, and engrossing from start to finish. The film was obviously made on a tight budget, and this is most apparent in the makeup FX department where a few closeups of the bullet hole being, um...explored (?) look truly terrible. But most of the shots that were designed to fit within these tight budgetary restrictions--including Sachiko being contacted by our current Commander in Chief and panic aboard a US aircraft carrier--actually benefit from their eccentric, low-tech execution.
If you're looking for something sexy, this lead actress has got it, and she's never dressed for long (which is a VERY good thing). GLAMOROUS LIFE is a bizarre, erotic, semi-sci-fi, comedy/thriller that I recommend to viewers who are tired of the same old crap and want to see something different. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a good family film, this ain't it! |
