| I’m not saying this film made me wanna get dressed up like a Japanese school-girl and prance around with 2 miles of crap attached to the antenna of my cell phone, but that’s exactly what I did. I’ve developed a pretty low tolerance for bad movies over the years and I swear I was preparing myself to stop the film 20 minutes in, but there’s something about this film that’s so damn charming it kind of makes you sick. Perhaps it’s that these seemingly sweet teenagers decide to form a band for the talent contest to cover a punk rock song by Japan’s legendary pop punkers The Blue Hearts, instead of covering some lame karaoke pop-sap, or maybe it was the sheer joy of seeing Korea’s Donna Bae ("Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance", "The Host") transform herself from a shy exchange student to a rock machine as the band’s lead singer. The film is well acted, the characters kinda believable and the pacing never really sags too much. What can I say…I was pleasantly surprised and found myself enjoying it. So, if my crusty, player-hater ass enjoyed it, most people will probably really love it. |
