A wealthy Mexican family' tries to fool their father into spending less by telling him that his large fortune is gone. However, the old man discovers the deception and sets out to teach his family that they are all worthless and lazy.
Overview:
Bunuel's dark screwball comedy tells of a wealthy Mexican family's attempt to change the spending habit of their selfish and hedonistic father. The family decides to try to fool him into spending less by telling him that his large fortune is gone and assuming a life of poverty. However, the old man discovers the deception but--in order to teach his family that they are all worthless and lazy and to vindicate his own reputation--he continues to feign ignorance while sneaking off during the day to conduct his still thriving business.
Bunuel had not made a film since "L'Age D'Or" in 1930, and this was his comeback film of sorts, and it provided enough box office and critical acceptance to re-establish him as a filmmaker. Playing like a socially conscious, Latin take on Preston Sturges' and Frank Capra's American screwball comedies, "The Great Madcap" is an undiscovered gem.
